Second Empire Surfaces Inc. a sister company to Carvel & Helm, offers a diverse range of architectural and decorative products, including wallcoverings, tiles, artwork, and interior fixtures. As a Production Artist & Operator at Second Empire Surfaces Inc., you will be responsible for the operation of a digital wide-format printer, and all aspects of the printing process to create custom wallcoverings. As a key member of our team, the Production Artist & Operator will liaise with our multi-disciplinary design team and must have the ability to combine creative instincts with technical skills to create print products of the highest quality. The successful candidate will have a background in graphic communications and digital print, and a demonstrated understanding of electronic pre-press and post-press operations, combined with the latest printing and production technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Engage with colleagues to determine production requirements, offer recommendations and feedback from both a creative and technical perspective.

• Communicate with design team to outline workflow, challenges, or needs prior to mobilizing production. Ability to identify priorities, set deadlines, and establish creative standards from a production perspective.

• Review job orders to determine job specifications such as production time, colour sequence and quantities required. Review art files for deficiencies and provide correction for approval.

• Maintain the studio's production inventory and timelines. Responsible for timely and quality output of all assigned jobs from docket review through production to packaging.

• Operate high-volume, wide-format, digital printer with latex ink. Load, set up, and unload media and inks. Operate commercial roll-cutter. Use and maintain equipment and supplies with respect and care.

• Adhere to Quality Assurance standards to ensure outputs are of the highest possible caliber, including post-production inspections.

• Recognize and visually differentiate colors. Keen perception for even the subtlest shifts in color in accordance with industry standards.

• Inspect all printed and cut products, ensuring quality standards are maintained and comply with specifications as noted on the work order.

• Print soft and hard copy proofs for internal review and approval. Address feedback and provide solutions to design or technical challenges.

• Ensure that the production and shipping areas are kept in a clean, safe and orderly manner, according to Health and Safety Policies.

• Maintain an organized and accessible digital file management system.

• Packaging large-format rolls for shipping. Receiving and organizing materials for inventory.

• Evaluating, adjusting, and creating new policies and procedures as needed for effective operations.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• 3-5 years of experience working in prepress production and/or graphic arts.

• Adobe Creative Suite: Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

• Understanding of RIP software. Please note that printer-specific training will be required.

• Must be PC and MAC literate.

• Superior (Good) score on the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test.

• Ability to read architectural drawings and interpret job requirements for repeats, pattern matching, murals, and dimensions is considered an asset.

• Physical aspects of the job include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
