Our busy, inclusive Support Centre has a unique and intellectually stimulating full-time opportunity for an organized, results and detail orientated person. As a member of the Support Centre Team, the Design Manager is adept at managing design processes and resources efficiently. Put simply, they develop comprehensive design schedules, ensuring that each phase of the project is executed within the allocated timeframe. Additionally, they allocate resources effectively, considering factors such as manpower, materials, and equipment. Meanwhile, by effectively managing these aspects, the Design & Construction Manager streamlines the design workflow, optimising productivity and minimising delays.
As a Design & Construction Manager for FMI, you will:
- Ensure compliance with building regulations and industry standards.
- Ensure that designs meet all legal requirements and safety standards by obtaining permits and approvals.
- Manage the entire design process from conceptualisation to execution.
- Responsible for project planning, resource management, quality control, and compliance with regulations.
- Supervise the development of and enforce drafting methods, content standards, quality standards, documentation and workflow process standards, their usage across the design team and with consultants, to ensure the creation of quality documentation for projects that are aligned with FMI standards, Brand design intent and comply with the relevant building regulations, municipality authorities and landlord requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of the Design schedules, monitor and maintain the program project schedule on a weekly basis, meets regularly with the Director of Asset Development to discuss program progress.
- Foster effective communication among stakeholders ensuring seamless coordination through the product lifecycle.
- Work closely with architects and engineers to ensure the design aligns with structural requirements.
- The creation and tracking of Design schedules and budgets to ensure project deliverables are accomplished.
- Manage the design team to ensure smooth execution of projects.
- Establish & maintain high staff morale, model sound leadership and teamwork, provide regular feedback to promote the utilization of best practices, standards and productivity.
- Liaise with Brand administration, FMI Senior Management, other FMI departments, Contractors, Vendors, Municipality Officials and
- Landlords as required to update, advise and address concerns and issues.
- Support operational best practices by using and assisting in the creation of; standards, tools, and procedures.
- Travel will take place throughout each year; applicants must have a valid passport, driver's license.
- As well as other tasks assigned from time to time.
Qualifications - Core Skills
- You have 2 years post-secondary education, preferably in the field of Architectural, Civil and/or Mechanical Technology. 5 years work experience in the Design-Build Construction field.
- You have one to three years proven experience in design and/or construction coordination under supervision of a Project Manager.
- Experience in supervising construction projects with proven experience in the delivery of quality projects on time and budget.
- Experience and knowledge in compliance to related construction codes and legislation, safety guidelines and regulations addressing
- construction projects and recognition of hazards.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and construction documents.
- You are recognized for your attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize multiple deliverables.
- You have experience coordinating contractors, city professionals, and suppliers.
- Proficient computer skills, particularly with e-mail, spreadsheets and word processing programs such as Microsoft Windows Suite.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- You thrive on effectively contributing fresh ideas and innovative solutions for your organization and your clients.
- The willingness to accept other job responsibilities as needed.
- You are a hard worker and welcome a busy and fast-paced environment.
- Being bilingual in French and English will be considered an asset.

- Negotiating contracts with vendors, contractors and sub-contractors
- Advanced Knowledge of construction trades.
- Knowledge of streets, sewers, and public and private utilities.
