Electrical Engineer - Generation Engineering

Summary:

Performs the duties of Electrical Engineer specializing in the area of generation, operational support and engineering design. This involves all aspects of design and support including root cause analysis of major trips, faults or generating unit anomalies, evaluation of abnormal unit and system behaviors with respect to asset operation, developing technical standards and engineering documentation. Work will be performed as part of capital projects, operating projects, and maintenance activities.

Principal Activities, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational support and engineering design for Electrical systems and equipment with respect to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Non-Regulated Generating Assets.
  • Prepare and/or provide support for the preparation of technical specifications, drawings, schematics, wiring lists, equipment lists and work packages.
  • Participates in developing Generation Engineering related Electrical engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Maintains a current knowledge on the latest Electrical design and troubleshooting techniques applicable to the technical and operational areas of both existing and future design requirements.
  • Assist with troubleshooting operational issues related to generating units and associated equipment, and may be required to supervise Hydro and Contractors' personnel in the solution of these problems.
  • Provide technical support to assist with preparation and execution of preventative maintenance programs and overall asset management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing operating and maintenance practices and procedures with respect to safety, health and environment, cost, performance and longevity.
  • Complete detailed analysis of major unit and system events, trips, anomalies and disturbances to determine root causes.
  • Provide technical support during preparation of contract documents for capital or operating projects.
  • Participate in and develop where applicable on-line condition monitoring program to ensure equipment id functioning properly, trends are identified and corrected at optimum times.
  • Provide technical support during completion of capital or operating projects and participate in design, design reviews, factory acceptance testing and commissioning as required.
  • Prepare and/or review "as built" drawings and operating and maintenance manuals for new or modified equipment.
  • Accept responsibility for work by affixing professional seal to documents and drawings.
  • Participate in training and development activities.
  • Incumbent may be required to at times provide support to other groups.
  • Participate in the Corporate Safety & Health Program including: participate in quarterly safety & health meetings; complete duties as outlined in the Soldiers Pond Evacuation Plan; and complete duties as outlined in the Corporate Accident/Incident Investigation Program.
  • Incumbent shall work in accordance with the Health and Safety Policies & Procedures and strive to eliminate any potential risk which could result in personal injury or occupational illness.
  • Incumbent shall be familiar with the Environmental Policy and Guiding Principles and applicable environmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Job Requirements:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of five (5) years experience from graduation, with experience related to the type of work.
