Admissions Counsellors have the lead role in attracting prospective students to St. Thomas. Reporting to the Director of Student Recruitment, Admissions Counsellors will meet enrolment targets by developing close working relationships with key stakeholders in their territory, including prospective high school students, parents, high school guidance counsellors / administrators / teachers, alumni, transfer students, adult learners, and others. Admissions Counsellors will work with students from the point of contact through enrolment; will perform admissions and scholarship assessments; and will collaborate with all members of the Student Recruitment team as well as other key internal groups, including the Admissions Office, the Registrar's Office, Marketing and Communications, Athletics, Student Services, alumni, current STU students, and others.

Hours of work: Full-Time (35 hours per week); Monday to Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Classification/Level: Band 5

Salary Range: $51,988 - $71,668

Responsibilities
  • Works within a data-driven system to meet and exceed targets for territory of responsibility. Works as a team to help others reach their goals.
  • Assists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive and effective recruitment strategy; follows up through correspondence, repeat visits, telethons, campus tours, etc.
  • Makes arrangements to visit high schools and meet with students, guidance counsellors, teachers and principals, as appropriate. While at schools, sets up displays and/or gives presentations to students, parents, teachers, counsellors, and others.
  • In a timely fashion, responds to inquiries from prospective students, guidance counsellors, parents and others via email, telephone or in person.
  • Works extensively with our digital customer relations management system.
  • Assists in recruitment-related event planning and event execution.
  • Evaluates applications for admission to our BA, BAA, BEd, BSW, MMBSW, certificate, and non-degree programs.
  • Evaluates applications for scholarships and participates in the awarding of renewable entrance scholarships as a member of the Entrance Scholarship Committee.
  • Maintains familiarity with high school curricula and builds and maintains relationships with high school guidance counsellors.
  • Contributes to an effective admissions service with a variety of administrative and clerical duties and performing other duties as assigned.
  • Contributes to international recruitment.
  • Contributes to developing content for marketing projects and recruitment and admissions related promotional materials-may include e-newsletters, website content, direct mail pieces, social media content.
  • Assists with helping new high school students register for their first-year classes.
  • Assists in the arrangement and delivery of campus tours, campus events, and on-campus presentations for individuals and groups.
  • Participates in the selection, training, and supervision of student employees.­
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • A university degree.
  • Demonstrated capacity to deal effectively, with poise and confidence, with students, parents, guidance counsellors, and other important stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and well-developed communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to present the University in a positive way to diverse populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to perform duties requiring tact, sensitivity, and cultural competency.
  • Strong organizational skills; the ability to work independently and as a member of a team; capable of beginning or following through with a plan or task without being prompted.
  • Understanding of and experience with digital media and content creation-social, web, CMS, CRM, etc. considered an asset.
  • Understanding of St. Thomas University's mission, values and policies, along with its academic and administrative structures and the St. Thomas University Strategic Plan.
  • Detailed knowledge of Canadian education systems, as well as a working knowledge of American and international systems.
  • Sensitivity to the needs, challenges, and interests of prospective university students, including international students.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with word processing skills and database management systems.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Bilingual (English, French, or Spanish, in particular) is an asset.
  • Travel experience an asset; must possess a valid passport.
  • Familiarity with St Thomas University is considered an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive off-site travel leads to disruption in lifestyle and work schedules.
  • Irregular working hours. Evening and weekend work required.
  • Given the frequent travel and the need to transport and distribute large quantities of promotional materials, physical stamina is a prerequisite.
