MANAGER, SPACE PLANNING (BAND LEVEL 10)
Department of Facilities Management
(Contractual Position to August 23, 2026)
Memorial University is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join our Facilities Management team as the Manager of Space Planning. Memorial's campuses have a combined gross area of 5.5M sq. ft. spread over multiple campuses.
DUTIES
Reporting to the Director, Physical Infrastructure and Sustainability, the Manager will play a key role in both short and long-term space planning and analysis for the university. This position is responsible for optimizing the use of physical spaces across all campuses and for developing and implementing comprehensive space planning strategies to support the university's academic and administrative needs efficiently. Additionally, the Manager will oversee the management of leased spaces both on- and off-campus as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sign Shop.
Duties include:
- Collaborating with academic departments and administrative units to understand their space requirements and long-term goals;
- Allocating and reallocating space as needed, ensuring equitable distribution among departments;
- Coordinating communication related to the campus space planning process;
- Communicating with senior administration, management, operations working groups and campus committees in a consultative role to support space request reviews and recommendations to Vice-Presidents and the St. John's Space Committee, contributing to pre-planning and space allocation goals;
- Working in conjunction with the Managers, Minor and Major Capital to perform early planning work on proposed capital projects;
- Collaborating with campus units regarding the maintenance and updates of space-related databases;
- Maintaining accurate records of space assignments, utilization, and allocations
- Utilizing space management software and tools to track and report on space data;
- Resolving space audit recommendations;
- Facilitating the generation of lease documents in relation to space requirements and associated programming for university leased space off campus;
- Facilitating the process for leased space where Memorial is the lessor;
- Ensuring effective utilization of university owned space is reviewed in conjunction with space requests for additional leased space;
- Reviewing the lease portfolio to ensure lease renewals align with expiry dates and are considered for relocation into university owned space;
- Ensuring signage standards are met;
- Managing the university signage standard document and providing updates as necessary, in conjunction with the Director and university stakeholders;
- Staying informed about relevant building codes, accessibility requirements, and safety regulations; ensuring that all space allocations and modifications adhere to these regulations;
- Overseeing the space allocation and standards policy on behalf of the Associate Vice-President (Facilities);
- Performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (5-7 years) in space planning, preferably in a university or educational setting; completion of a bachelor's degree in architecture, urban planning, technology, or a related field is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered. The ideal candidate will possess strong understanding of space management software and tools; excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders; knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, and safety regulations. Project management experience is an asset.
SALARY $74,288 - $96,297 per annum (Management and Professional)
