Established in 2003, ACENET is a consortium of universities and community colleges in Atlantic Canada. We provide researchers in both academia and industry with essential Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) resources, tools, software, training, and support. Our mission is to help our clients leverage DRI to accelerate discovery and innovation. ACENET is a regional partner of the Alliance, the national organization ensuring that Canadian researchers have access to the digital tools and infrastructure necessary to remain competitive on the global stage and to drive innovation and discovery across all fields of study.
ACENET is seeking a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Administrator to join our Infrastructure team. In this role, the incumbent will help manage and maintain our regional advanced research computing infrastructure, including HPC clusters, GPUs, storage systems, and high throughput or low-latency network architecture. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Systems Administrator to ensure the integrity, availability, security, and performance of our research computing infrastructure.
This position is based in St. John's, NL, and the successful candidate will be employed by Memorial University (MUN), ACENET's lead institution.
DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure, the Systems Administrator will be responsible for supporting a team of experienced Systems Administrators in managing, monitoring, and maintaining HPC clusters, storage solutions, servers, and networks to ensure system reliability and performance; installing, configuring, and updating hardware and software to optimize system performance; implementing backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and continuity; providing technical support to ACENET staff and HPC users; assisting the Manager, Infrastructure in working with external vendors for hardware procurement and support; collaborating with ACENET Research Consultants and national Digital Research Infrastructure stakeholders to ensure system alignment with national initiatives; producing and maintaining system documentation and standard operating procedures; staying up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends; contributing to the development and implementation of new technological solutions, assessing and testing their effectiveness; and performing other related duties as required. The incumbent will visit MUN data centers regularly to support our systems on site.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (1-3 years) in (Linux) system administration, preferably in a research or academic environment; completion of a university degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, or a related field is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The ideal candidate is expected to be passionate about HPC, networking hardware, file systems, and configuration management. The incumbent must have experience in Linux systems administration; virtual machine platforms; storage such as parallel file systems and tape backup solutions; scripting and automation such as Bash, Python, Ruby, Go, version control; and networking concepts in private and public environments. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, the ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences, and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team are essential for this role. The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
