The Opportunity

We are currently seeking two (2) Emergency Response Leads to join our Health, Safety, and Risk Team in Long Harbour, NL.

These are permanent on-site positions, working a 7 day on 7 day off (rotating days and nights) shift schedule at our Long Harbour Operations site.

As an Emergency Response Lead, you will lead the training and emergency response supervision of auxiliary Emergency Response team members to ensure that Operations are adequately prepared for site emergency response and capable of protecting people, property and the environment. Your experience and skills will allow you to ensure the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) is adequately established and incorporated into the Crisis Management System, providing uninterrupted continuity of the emergency response plan to ensure incident command is in place for a broad range of response scenarios. Reporting to the site Health, Safety, and Risk Superintendent in LH, the ER Lead is a trainer and a team member that will ensure the day-to-day readiness and for the protection of people, property, and the environment at the Long Harbour Operations site.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Adhere to the site Emergency Response Plan for all response scenarios at the Long Harbour Operations site and lead a team of auxiliary Emergency Response Team (AERT) members in all emergency scenarios including but not limited to medical, fire, gas response, hazardous materials, dam/water retaining structure failure, environmental response, etc.
  • Ensure 24-hour continuity of Emergency Response Incident Command on site through shift hand over and on call support as scheduled.
  • Provide leadership and technical support to all AERT members on shift ensuring necessary resources are on site and available to respond. As well as train and check competency of the AERT members in accordance with the AERT training program and ensure training records are entered into the Vale Education System (VES).
  • Support drills in accordance with site response plan including emergency evacuation and shelter-in-place and ensure readiness of all emergency response assets through required inspections.
  • Support third party testing of fire alarm equipment and systems along with troubleshoot fire alarm panel issues.
  • Maintain emergency response equipment to applicable legislative requirements and provide technical support and guidance for out of service fire protection equipment or system.
  • Participate in effectiveness checks of emergency response critical controls and support the development and review of rescue plans for confined space entry, working at heights, etc.
  • Ensure the systems and programs which are developed are aligned with Provincial OHS, NFPA and Vale Standards. Along with all other work as planned by site Emergency Response Supervisor/Health, Safety, and Risk Superintendent.

About You

Education:

  • A minimum of a college diploma in an accredited 1-year firefighter program is required.
  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • NFPA Firefighter Level I and II.
    • Class 5 or equivalent driver's license.
    • NFPA 472 - Hazardous Materials - Operations.
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • Pump Operations, Hydraulics, Driver/Operator Airbrake endorsement.
    • EMT (Emergency Medical Tech) or AMFR (Advanced Medical First Aid).
    • NFPA 1081 - Industrial Firefighter or NFPA 1051 – Wildland Firefighting
    • NFPA 1006
    • NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor Level 1.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years in a similar role is required.
  • Experience in a fire/rescue or wildfire setting is an asset.

Skills:

  • Competent knowledge of applicable OH&S and NFPA legislation.
  • Familiar with NFPA codes based on fire protection systems.
  • Experience delivering in class and practical training.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral).
  • Able to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, and leadership qualities.
