About the Great Coastal Trail Authority (GCTA):
The Great Coastal Trail Authority is a newly incorporated not-for-profit organization responsible for developing, maintaining, promoting, and managing the world-class 850km+ Great Coastal Trail. The trail will connect two of Newfoundland's iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Gros Morne National Park to L'Anse aux Meadows, and beyond on the Great Northern Peninsula, serving as a premier hiking and biking destination. The project aims to enhance tourism, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic development while preserving the region's cultural and environmental integrity.
Position Summary:
The Great Coastal Trail Authority is seeking a dynamic and strategic Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization through its formative years and oversee the planning, development, and long-term sustainability of the Great Coastal Trail. The ED will serve as the primary advocate, fundraiser, and operational leader, working closely with government agencies, municipalities, development associations, community organizations, and funding partners to bring the trail vision to life.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Governance:
· Develop and implement a strategic plan to guide the successful execution of the Great Coastal Trail vision and objectives.
· Establish and maintain strong relationships with the Board of Directors, stakeholders, government agencies, and community partners.
· Provide transparent and effective leadership to ensure the organization's financial and operational stability.
· Lead the recruitment for a small but powerful management team that will implement the vision for the organization.
· Act as the public face and primary spokesperson for the GCTA, advocating for trail development and economic benefits to the region.
Project Management & Trail Development:
· Oversee the phased development and construction of the Great Coastal Trail, ensuring alignment with best practices in sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure development.
· Work closely with architects, engineers, planners, and contractors to manage project timelines, budgets, and funding agreements.
· Develop and implement trail management policies, including maintenance, visitor engagement, and environmental impact monitoring.
Fundraising & Financial Management:
· Lead efforts to secure public and private funding, including government grants, corporate sponsorships, and philanthropic donations.
· Manage the organization's finances, ensuring responsible budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
· Explore revenue-generating opportunities such as memberships, trail passes, partnerships, and merchandising.
Marketing & Community Engagement:
· Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy to attract domestic and international visitors.
· Foster strong relationships with tourism operators, local businesses, and community groups to create a welcoming and engaging trail experience.
· Lead initiatives to build local support, recruit volunteers, and cultivate a passionate trail stewardship network.
Qualifications & Experience:
· Bachelor's or Master's degree in business administration, tourism management, environmental studies, or a related field, or a combination of experience.
· Minimum of 7-10 years of senior leadership experience, preferably in non-profit management, tourism development, or public sector administration.
· Proven experience in project management, grant writing, fundraising, and financial oversight.
· Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
· Familiarity with outdoor recreation, trail development, and sustainable tourism best practices.
· Experience working with government agencies, community organizations, and economic development initiatives is a strong asset.
