This is a key leadership role focused on the planning and delivery of bridge and highway maintenance programs within the district.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) plays a critical role in supporting the mobility, safety, and economic well-being of New Brunswickers. They are responsible for planning, building, operating, and maintaining the province's transportation infrastructure, including more than 18,000 km of highways, bridges, and culverts. Their work also extends to the construction and upkeep of government buildings, oversight of fleet services, and management of the provincial ferry and mobile radio communication systems. Through strategic partnerships and sustainable practices, they deliver essential infrastructure services that connect communities, enable public services, and support the province's long-term growth.
Role Description
Reporting to the Regional Director for District 4, the Assistant District Engineer leads a team responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound operation of transportation infrastructure. You'll manage district programs, provide technical direction, and support the day-to-day operations of maintenance teams. The role requires a confident and experienced leader capable of supervising unionized employees, managing budgets, working with external consultants, and liaising with elected officials and members of the public. This position is primarily office-based with regular travel within the district.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing highway and bridge maintenance operations throughout the district, ensuring timely and effective service delivery.
- Leading people management across a unionized environment, including hiring, supervision, performance management, and participation in regular HR meetings.
- Administering and managing the operational budget for district maintenance and employees resourcing, including seasonal hiring and procurement.
- Reviewing engineering consultant-submitted designs and managing consultant relationships for tendered projects.
- Responding to inquiries from elected officials and the public with professionalism.
- Review subdivision approvals and contribute to broader infrastructure planning initiatives.
Your Qualifications
As the Assistant District Engineer, you are a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with experience in highway, infrastructure or public works, and a proven ability to lead teams. You bring strong judgment, an ability to build effective relationships, and a focus on operational excellence. You understand the intricacies of government and what it means to be community-facing. Your background includes managing unionized teams, collaborating with elected officials, and delivering results within government or similarly structured organizations.
Your qualifications include:
- A bachelor's degree in municipal, civil or a related field of engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) or Registered as a Professional Engineer with a Canadian regulatory body.
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience; 3+ years in highway construction and/or maintenance.
- 1 to 3 years of direct supervisory or people management experience.
- Experience managing unionized staff is considered an asset.
- Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.
- Written and spoken competence in English is required.
