Role Overview:
As Legal Counsel at Medavie, you will play a crucial role in providing legal advice and support across the organization. Your responsibilities will include advising on legal matters; reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts; supporting corporate initiatives; and managing legal resources. You will work closely with external counsel and various departments to ensure compliance and mitigate legal risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate business contracts with third parties.
  • Provide general legal advice in corporate, commercial, contract, and insurance law.
  • Advise departmental leaders on applicable laws and interpretation of legal documents, ensuring practical legal approaches and risk management.
  • Negotiate contracts with clients, vendors, and service providers to support business needs.
  • Call upon external counsel and colleagues for support when needed.
  • Support the Privacy Office on complex privacy matters.
  • Create resources to support the Legal Services team's library and knowledge base.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the legal and regulatory environment for Medavie Inc. and its subsidiaries.
  • Participate in committees and projects as required.
  • Assist in the development of contract policies, procedures, and risk identification.
  • Provide input in the development and implementation of legal and compliance policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • LL.B (Bachelor of Law) or J.D. from an accredited Canadian University, or equivalent qualification.
  • Expertise in commercial law, contracts law, and insurance law.
  • 2-5 years of experience as a practicing lawyer in a Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Experience as in-house counsel in a Canadian organization (unionized or non-unionized).
  • Experience in financial services or other highly regulated industries (e.g., insurance, banking, energy) preferred.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society in at least one province in Canada.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Business acumen and understanding of compliance and regulatory adherence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal matters.
  • Bilingualism (English/ French) considered an asset.
