The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association (NLTA) is a dynamic organization dedicated to the professional excellence and personal well-being of teachers to promoting the cause of K-12 education and the teaching profession. With over 6,000 active members, the NLTA operates through a collaborative structure of school representatives, 47 local Branches, and 17 special interest councils. Governed by a 12-member Provincial Executive Council and supported by dedicated staff, the NLTA works closely with key partners to amplify the voices of educators and advocate for meaningful change in the provincial education system.

The Opportunity

The NLTA is seeking a highly motivated and flexible leader to fill the position of Executive Director. Reporting to the President and the Provincial Executive, the Executive Director is the Association's Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the effective management of overall operations of the Association, including:

- strategic leadership and problem solving

- finance and facilities oversight

- communications and public relations guidance

- policy development and compliance

- labour relations and contract negotiation

- member services and support

- staff leadership and development

- supporting governance structures, including the planning and organization of meetings and providing consultation and advice to the elected Provincial Executive, Table Officers and the President

The Executive Director is responsible for coordinating the delivery of all programs and ensuring smooth operations under the direction of the Provincial Executive and plays a key role in advising the Association on provincial programs and services, advocacy initiatives and strategy. They are responsible for the implementation of Executive decisions, either directly or through delegation to other staff, and overseeing the work of same. The Executive Director provides leadership to a staff of 30 Administrative and Support Staff professionals.

With the President, the Executive Director represents the Association in establishing and maintaining productive relationships and liaison with government, employers and other K-12 education stakeholders in the province, and at the national level with the Canadian Teachers' Federation and its member organizations.

Salary and benefits for this position are competitive, including pension, group insurance, and generous leave provisions in accordance with the NLTA Executive Director Agreement.

The Ideal Candidate should have a strong track record of progressively senior experience within an education and/or union setting, excelling in complex, fast-paced, multi-partner environments. You are decisive, open-minded and collaborative, value diverse perspectives, foster strong teams, and ensure strategic objectives are met. You are skilled in staff development, resource management, and budgetary oversight and have demonstrated success in building transparent, productive relationships.

You are a trusted leader and an advocate for public education and teachers, with extensive knowledge of labour relations and public policy and experience in complex negotiations and government relations. You navigate challenges with diplomacy and integrity. You have excellent communication skills, the ability to facilitate consensus and build trust and rapport with key partners and stakeholders. You are a strategic, thinker who drives organizational success while managing difficult situations with composure. You are organized and able to balance multiple priorities.
