Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

  • Leading new research initiatives and exploring solutions to geomatics challenges and research questions.
  • Managing the topo-bathymetric lidar processing environment and developing related tools.
  • Supervising students and mentoring new research assistants and research associate employees.
  • Leading research proposals and providing technical assistance for proposals led by others.
  • Exploring and staying updated on new developments in geomatics data analysis and visualization that can be adopted by AGRG to enhance research capacity.
  • Leading research into AI and machine learning, investigating how these technologies can be leveraged in geomatics research.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is either an advanced diploma/Journey Person/Red Seal Certificate in the area of research or a degree in an area relevant to Applied Research (Geology, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, or Computer Science).
  • You have a minimum of 5 years (full-time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in a research environment, which includes fieldwork and/or industry experience.
  • A Masters degree in an area relevant to Applied Research (Geology, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, or Computer Science) would be considered an asset.
  • Occupational experience as a project manager coordinating multi-disciplinary applied research projects involving external partners and collaborators, as well as experience writing technical reports and overseeing data collection and processing would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with post-secondary students would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in an Applied Research setting to create projects would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, email, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • You have experience with GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, as well as programming in Python, LSS, Inertial Explorer, TerraScan, Cloud Compare, and Google Earth Engine.
  • Experience developing coastal flood vulnerability maps or other derived information from lidar, such as seaweed biomass, forest metrics, or similar, would be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with storm return periods and knowledge about where and how storm surge return periods are calculated would be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with climate change projections and specifically the implications in Atlantic Canada around relative sea-level rise would be considered an asset.
  • You have experience managing projects and clients, conducting fieldwork and analysis in the office and report writing.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.
  • Experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students would be considered an asset.

  • You are a strong communicator.
  • You demonstrate analytical skills, problem-solving techniques, and the ability to look beyond symptoms to gather facts and information.
  • You possess excellent coordination skills specifically related to geomatics projects, such as managing the project and interacting with the client, maintaining timelines, and delivering products on time.
  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities specifically related to data and project management.
