LABOUR RELATIONS LAWYER

NEW BRUNSWICK ASSOCIATION OF NURSING HOMES, INC

The New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes (NBANH) is an organization that provides services and advocates for the interests of the 77 nursing homes in New Brunswick, which employ over 7,500 people.

Employment and Labour Relations services are among the key services that NBANH offers its members. NBANH is seeking an individual who is passionate about working in a socially conscious environment and interested in being challenged to find practical solutions to a wide range of issues.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role collaborates with other members of the NBANH team to provide interpretation of collective agreements for managers, leads, or assists with collective agreement negotiations.

Additionally, it represents member homes at grievance arbitrations, Workers' Compensation Appeal Tribunal hearings, and Labor and Employment Board hearings.

The individual in this role will also provide additional services consistent with their level of expertise. This is a leadership role in the long-term care sector that requires the successful candidate to be involved and kept up to date on all NBANH initiatives and sector developments, as expected of an in-house counsel resource.

NBANH is seeking the right person and is willing to create a role that leverages that person's strengths. Although a significant portion of this role involves providing labour and employment services, there is also an opportunity to meet other organizational needs, including ethics in care provision, management education and training, and policy and legislative review and advocacy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide interpretation of existing collective agreements for managers
  • Be a resource for managers concerning labour and employment matters
  • Negotiate Collective Agreements as lead or in support
  • Conduct legal research and provide legal opinions as needed to member homes, or internally within NBANH
  • Occasional travel throughout New Brunswick is required
  • Additional roles, depending on the skill set of the successful applicant
  • Participation in sector development based on interest and capacity
  • Develop reports, give presentations and educational sessions as needed

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • University degree in law
  • Eligibility for membership in the New Brunswick Law Society
  • Experience in Labour and Employment Law would be an asset
  • Committed to creating positive social changes and organizational improvement
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent and creative problem-solving skills
  • Highly organized individuals with strong attention to detail

Terms of Employment

Permanent, Full-Time Position, 37.5 hours per week. Local and provincial travel may be required. This position is based in Fredericton, NB.

Salary and Benefits

  • $80,000-$130,000 annual salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience
