Job Summary
The Laboratory Technologist III is an intensively trained medical laboratory health professional who provides anatomic pathology services. This position will be primarily responsible for the overall grossing of surgical specimens ensuring standards of practice under the direct supervision of the Pathologist and Division Manager. Duties also include, but are not limited to, describing gross anatomic features, dissecting surgical specimens, performing postmortem evisceration and dissection, preparing tissue for histologic processing and handling/collecting biological specimens such as blood, tissue, bone marrow toxicological material and fine needle aspirates for studies such as flow cytometry, muscle histochemistry, immunofluorescence, image analysis and immunohistochemistry. Administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, specimen coding and billing, maintenance of equipment, teaching and other duties as assigned.

Constantly lifts/moves objects less than 10 lbs. and occasionally objects up to 30 lbs.
Constantly stands, sometimes for extended periods, or sits for extended periods requiring constant repetitive movement. Also, constant bending or stretching and working in awkward positions.
Constantly requires fine finger and precision work and requires the use of gross motor skills to perform with accurate control and steadiness.
Visual concentration is required when performing procedures and auditory concentration is required to communicate and give information, to listen for alarms, timers, etc.

Job Qualifications
Master's Degree in Science in Pathologist Assistant is required.
Minimum of three years of experience within the last five working in Pathology is required.
Current and continuing certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA) as a Pathologist Assistant is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.

*Effective May 1, 2025, all Medical Radiation Technologists and X - Ray Health Professionals will require registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP) in the appropriate discipline(s) in order to practice in Newfoundland and Labrador. The successful applicant is required to achieve registration by May 1, 2025.

Training Opportunity
If there are no qualified applicants, NL Health Services may offer an on-the-job training opportunity for one candidate to train as a Laboratory Technologist III (Pathologist Assistant). To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience within the last five working in Pathology, and a satisfactory record of work performance and attendance. Training may take up to 18 months. During this period, the selected candidate will be evaluated at regular intervals to ensure successful completion of the program.

Return in Service Commitment and Salary
The candidate will be assigned to the LX-29 pay scale during the training; however, the position will advance to LX-32 pay scale pending competencies attained as determined by the division's manager. The training may also be subject to a return in service commitment.
