The salary scale for Professional Support 2 is based on steps that range from $64,783.04 - $86,126.92. New Professional Support employees may receive up to a maximum of seven steps for relevant occupational experience which is $75,439.19 annually.

This is a designated position open to members from the African Nova Scotian and Indigenous communities.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

The Student Support Navigator (SSN) role is dedicated to the Limitless program and students, as well as the broader NSCC student community connected to Community Corrections or the Justice System. The SSN will work to remove barriers by offering essential supports such as housing, food security, health and wellness, transportation, tuition, and program-related expenses. Additionally, the SSN will provide dedicated coaching to help participants successfully transition into and complete an NSCC post-secondary program.

The Student Support Navigator reports directly to the NSCC Manager, School of Access, Education & Language, and is expected to travel provincially year-round to support all students involved with Community Corrections across NSCC campuses. This designated candidate must have lived experience with Community Corrections.

As a Student Support Navigator, you will collaborate with multiple departments of NSCC, government partners, and the School of Access, Education & Language to support students in developing education and life skills plans. Your role will involve in-depth coaching and navigation with each participant to maximize educational success and meaningful future employment. In alignment with NSCC's mission and values, you will help establish and deliver a safe, inclusive, and thriving learning experience that promotes well-being and success-both personally and academically-for all your students.

The SSN duties and responsibilities are directly linked to the Limitless Program activities. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Promoting the program directly with government, community, and potential students.
  • Providing support and guidance for program students to transition to NSCC.
  • Facilitating connections to social services and community resources.
  • Connecting students to supports for housing, food security, mental health, addictions, and other needs.
  • Maximizing culturally appropriate social and resource supports for students to enable them to complete their education and training by building stronger linkages between existing and future community-based, educational, and provincial government partners.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a Diploma in Correctional Services, Social Sciences or its equivalent would be an asset.
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of recent and related occupational experience within the Justice System or Social Services.
  • First voice experience with Community Corrections and the Justice system is an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Teams, E-mail, Office 365.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience
  • You have recent experience supporting/providing culturally relevant service to post-secondary students and prospective students.

Relevant Skills and Knowledge

  • Occupational knowledge/skills in addressing substance use and addiction recovery is an asset.
  • Proficiency in locating and transitioning vulnerable clients to transition houses and support services is an asset.
  • You demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility and anti-racism
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills that enable you to interact with a diversity of people and support resolution of issues
  • You are known for your superior customer service skills and can create a relationship of trust beyond the immediate interaction
  • Your superb team working skills enable you to contribute positively to a team environment
  • You are known for your problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • You are a strong communicator both written and oral
  • You show a strong commitment to knowledge of social services processes and community involvement.

As a condition of employment, successful applicants are required to provide a Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search (CRC/VSS), to Human Resources before starting employment. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.
