JOB TEXT:

NLSchools is seeking applications for general pool interviews from new graduates, external applicants, and substitutes/replacement teachers.

NLSchools is a branch of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador administering primary, elementary and secondary educational services throughout the province. It provides educational services to approximately 65,000 school age children, from K-12, and covers the entire province.

This position works with students who are eligible and approved to receive english as an additional language instruction. The successful candidate will be responsible for initial and ongoing assessment of english language learning competencies, direct teaching in class and small group settings to support language, literacy and numeracy competencies and the delivery of the approved ESL curriculum. You support language development from linguistic, literary, social, cultural and psychological perspectives. Collaboration with teachers, parents and other student supports to enhance teaching and learning is expected. Travel to schools within a specific region may be required.

If an interview is required, the interview will focus on the application of the 7 Determinants of the School Development Model which are: Wellness and Positive Relationships; Optimal Learning Environments; Instructional Practice; Assessment Practices; Collective Efficacy; Evidence-based Decision Making, and Teachers as Learners. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Pedagogical and practical knowledge of teaching English as a second/additional language, including theory, learning strategies, stages of language development, individual differences, and language structure
  • A range of TESL teaching and evaluation and assessment methods, strategies, and skills
  • Culturally and linguistically responsive teaching methods including the planning and implementation of effective and responsive teaching and learning practices
  • Demonstrated evidence of how to shape a safe and positive learning environment for students and willingness to engage professionally with colleagues, families and communities
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed teaching practices will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated love of learning and an ability to build learner and leadership capacity

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Major in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
  • Appropriate Training Methods
  • Equivalences may be considered

Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.

Please note that candidates designated as Highly Recommended and Recommended in 2023 or 2024 individual or pool competitions will have that designation carried over for 2025 and will not require an interview for similar positions. If this applies to the candidate's situation, they do not need to apply to the pool completion but must apply to individual competitions. Only candidates that require an interview will be selected for the pool.

Interviews that occur during this hiring season will be designated as Recommendable or Not Recommendable at this time. Thus, going forward, the Recommendable designation will carry over and will equal the Highly Recommendable that will be phased out. Candidates must apply to individual competitions.
