Purpose

As the 3rd Line of Defence, Internal Audit provides enterprise-wide, independent, and objective assurance over the design and operations of the Bank's internal controls, risk management and governance processes. The Audit Manager contributes to the overall success of the Audit Function in support of the Audit Department executing its global mandate, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.

Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Supports the Officer in Charge (OIC) with the execution for assigned audits. This includes completion of audit testing, discussions with management and documentation of work performed.

  • May act as Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of low to medium complexity for assigned audits.

  • Works with other audit teams as required.

  • Executes, plans and reports on the assigned audits. Obtains a thorough understanding of the business/unit/ process and associated risks, develops an appropriate risk-based audit approach, and schedules timing and resources.

  • Ensures audit results are gathered, determining the root cause of the problem and the associated impact. Drafts reports and issues. Presents audit results and findings for presentation to management.

  • Champions a client focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.

  • Understands how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Obtains a thorough understanding of the business/unit/process and associated risks, supports the planning of audits or assigned areas, ensuring scope and extent of work is in accordance with the approved plan, and audit methodology.

  • Ensures Scotiabank standards and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Code of Ethics are maintained in completion of all assignments.

  • Stays informed on emerging risks, regulatory changes, and industry trends. Conveys risk-related information to Officer-in-Charge or Audit Principal and senior management.

  • Maintains stakeholder relationships to successfully carry out audit activities.

  • Champions a high-performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment.

  • Meets Department training requirements.

  • Ensures nature and extent of testing is appropriate to support the objective, scope and overall opinion. The incumbent will provide value-added recommendations to management as part of audits or on special projects / assignments.

  • Conducts data analytics to support relevant audit projects as required. Develops and/or enhances dashboards to enable data-driven continuous monitoring and auditing.

  • Ensures timely completion of workpapers, ensures internal control weaknesses are clearly documented with recommendations addressing the root cause and findings are communicated timely to management.

Education/Experience

  • University/Post secondary in a quantitative discipline (e.g. Statistics, Computer Science, Finance) or related experience.

  • 3-5 years of experience in retail credit risk management, knowledge of risk management regulation framework. Prior experience with SOX controls (IFRS9) is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of the operations and regulatory environments for each unit as applicable.

  • Ability to work in high levels of ambiguity and in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Proficient at applying Scotiabank methodology and using risk-based auditing standards and practices.

  • Working knowledge or experience in Machine Learning techniques (clustering, decision trees, neural networks) and other advanced statistical analysis techniques and concepts is an asset.

  • Proficient experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI is preferred.

  • Proficient in advanced data analytics, credit risk modeling techniques and analytical tools (SAS, SQL, R, Python, Alteryx).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to collaborate with teams and management at various levels. Experience in writing and presenting data analytics/MIS results.

  • Good people management and coaching/development skills.

  • Curiosity mindset.

  • Spanish language skill would be an asset, though not required.
