Northwood is currently accepting applications for a Labour Relations Advisor, reporting to the Corporate Director, People Services.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree, Community College Diploma in Human Resource Management or equivalent education and experience
  • Knowledge of the Trade Union Act, Human Rights Code and other employment legislation
  • Experience in a multi-unionized environment
  • Experience with CUPE, NSGEU, Unifor and NSNU is an asset
  • Experience in long term care and/or homecare setting considered an asset
  • Experience with collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration management
  • Experience with Attendance Support Programs and employee accommodations
  • Certificate in Conflict Resolution preferred
  • A valid Nova Scotia Driver's License with reliable transportation
  • Ability to travel between sites and work outside of regular business hours on occasion.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for Employee and Labour relations across the organization including collective bargaining, conflict resolution, mediation, human rights, policy and contract interpretation
  • Responsible for the review, revision, introduction and implementation of Human Resources policies, guidelines and processes
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the performance management processes across the organization
  • Supports the Attendance Management Program across the organization
  • Responsible for the timely submission of quarterly reports
  • Acts as Harassment Officer for the organization as needed
  • Participates in the review, revision, introduction and implementation of Human Resources policies, guidelines and processes
  • Assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of the performance management processes across the organization
  • Provides leadership to and is a resource person for conflict resolution and mediation across the organization
  • Provides first level information to employees and managers on HR policies, programs, and procedures;
  • Resolves employee relations (ER) inquiries or escalates to the appropriate individual for further advice depending on severity;
  • Facilitates proper employee relations documentation and records, including writing employment documents and data entry into Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS);
  • Produces management reports for quartile submission to Board on People Services data reporting.
  • Manage, facilitate and attend Labour Management Meetings with Unions in line with the collective agreement
  • Maintaining and compiling reports and data sources, through researching information
  • Provides education, coaching and mentoring to managers and staff within the organization in areas of speciality (employee relations, organisational health and safety, labour relations, performance management)
  • Interprets Collective Agreements, policies and other relevant employee legislation
  • Provides advice, guidance and support to managers through discipline, and grievance procedures
  • Provides support to services with external audit and licencing requirements and lead on the People Services elements that form part of the requirements
  • Represents the organization at employee related hearings and investigations
  • Assists with tracking and maintaining of the various seniority lists
  • Partners with the leadership team to communicate various employee relations and human resources policies, procedures, employment law, standards and government regulations
  • Supports the business leaders and team members in solving business problems
  • Assists in training and development for Leaders in the areas of Employee Relations such as, Attendance Management, Performance Management, Harassment Free Workplace Training, Accountability Training and other as requested
  • Conducts exit interviews, analyzes data and makes recommendations to the management team for corrective action and continuous improvement
  • Counsels employees on work related matters
  • Attend Occupational Health and Safety Meetings ensuring departmental actions are followed through
  • Work closely with Organisational Health where employee relations matters and health matters merge
  • Oversees and participates in the collective bargaining process (e.g., ensures managers interests are aligned, anticipates union proposals, coordinates preparation meetings, determines bargaining committee, reviews contracts) and participates as a member in the bargaining team to represent corporate interests
  • Responds to and investigates informal and formal complaints of inappropriate conduct, harassment and discrimination
  • Leads and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental goals and objectives
  • Study and research best practices in Human Resources, legislation, arbitration decisions and collective bargaining contracts to assess industry trends
  • Other duties as required
