Job Summary
The Hospital Admitting Clerk I is responsible for receiving and admitting patients to the hospital and registering patients for the clinics, laboratory, surgical day care, operating room, etc. The Hospital Admitting Clerk I is involved in interviewing patients/family members to obtain information required to complete the registration process ensuring patient confidentiality, updating information on the Master Patient Index, contacting the appropriate personnel for bed assignment, obtaining consent for admission, answering telephones, ordering supplies books, and booking some applicable appointments as required. The Hospital Admitting Clerk I is also responsible for scanning health record documents into an electronic format and submitting verified information for on-line computer storage. Other clerical related tasks include filing and retrieving/assembling patient charts, retrieval of patient charts, and relieving/assisting with other clerical duties as necessary.

Lifting or moving objects less than 10 lbs. is occasionally required.
The use of fine finger/precision work to enter detailed information of patient appointments into computer programs and answering the phone is performed on a constant basis.
Visual concentration may include staring at a computer screen for extended periods.
Auditory concentration includes listening to stakeholders including patients and employees, answering the telephone multiple times a day, and gathering information.
Activities such as registering patients can be repetitious and require alertness as it could involve registration for the emergency department or a clinic.
Time pressures/deadlines/lack of control over work pace are experienced.
Job Qualifications
Successful completion of a one-year Office Administration program from an approved/recognized college is required.
Successful completion of an approved/recognized medical terminology course is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
*Proof of a current office administration program and medical terminology is required. To be considered current, they must have been completed within the last five years, unless it has been used in recent positions. This must be demonstrated on the application form.
** If the medical terminology isn’t current, a medical terminology test may be administered by the Human Resources Client Services Department.
