The Climate Change Secretariat (CCS) plays an instrumental leadership role in ensuring that New Brunswick reduces its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increases our resiliency and response to the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change. The CCS also focuses on initiatives related to education, awareness, and capacity-building and the CCS is responsible for the Climate Change Act and associated regulations. It is also responsible for the development of New Brunswick's Climate Change Action Plans and coordinates its implementation, tracking and reporting. The Secretariat works with government departments and agencies to ensure that actions on climate change are integrated with governmental policies, programs, and day-to-day decisions. The CCS also engages local governments and non-government partners and various stakeholders to increase knowledge and capacity while encouraging lower carbon and resilient investments and practices.

The Department of Environment and Local Government provides integrated stewardship through planning and management of land use, and waste management issues. It ensures effective enforcement of, and compliance with, environmental legislation and regulations and provides effective consultation and liaison with local governments, regional service commissions and Rural Districts on governance related issues.

What you will do?
Reporting to the Director of Climate Change Mitigation, the successful candidate will be responsible for: analyzing and providing advice on a range of GHG mitigation policy and program areas primarily relating to reducing, avoiding, capturing and storing carbon emissions; overseeing mitigation projects using project planning tools and technique; conducting reviews of development projects and funding applications; collaborating with local governments in their GHG planning; and preparing policy and analytical documents. You will provide advice and insights in climate change mitigation science, technology and innovation and represent the Climate Change Secretariat on various working groups and committees.

Essential qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in a field related to the science of climate change mitigation, such as Science or Environmental Management, or a related degree, with a minimum of (4) years of related experience, including the following:

  • A demonstrated understanding of Climate Change GHG Mitigation.
  • Experience undertaking analysis related to aspects of Climate Change;
  • Experience preparing reports related to aspects of Climate Change;
  • Project coordination and management experience;
  • Experience working with stakeholders.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following asset qualifications:

  • Experience working with an NGO or community organization or local government related to climate change GHG mitigation.
  • Published reports related to aspects of climate change GHG mitigation.
  • Project management experience related aspects of climate change GHG mitigation.
  • Demonstration of knowledge or experience in the following GHG mitigation topics: Transportation, Communities, and Nature-based solutions.

Wage
Pay Band 4: $2,216 to $3,099 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week

Work environment

  • Office location: 20 McGloin (Marysville Place), Fredericton.
  • Office layout: cubicles
  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30 (office schedule)
  • Possibility of remote work within New Brunswick.
