Position description

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Head Coach provides strategic direction for the Mount Allison football program, and is responsible for overall leadership and management of the program, which includes recruiting, developing and guiding assistant coaches and student-athletes in accordance with MtA values, and representing and promoting the program with students/alumni and in the larger community.

Position Responsibilities

  • Define the vision, goals and objectives for the football program in synergy with those of the Athletics Department and ensure their implementation.
  • Demonstrate appreciation for the critical role the head coach plays in the engagement of alumni for the support of our program and take a leadership role in fundraising activities related to the football program.
  • Leverage deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges related to the unique culture and history of an undergraduate university located in small town NB.
  • Exhibit effective athletic leadership towards optimal realization of team goals and objectives.
  • Build and manage coaching staff that optimizes opportunity for success.
  • Develop and implement an effective recruitment program to attract outstanding student-athletes to the University.
  • Meet personal and Team performance objectives as determined by the Director of Athletics and Recreation.
  • Provide guidance and support to student-athletes towards achieving their greatest potential academically, athletically and with respect to community citizenship.
  • Liaise with University Academic resources to develop leadership capacity amongst student-athletes and help design and/or monitor team members' personal development programs.
  • Serve as expert in all pertinent Atlantic University Sports (AUS)/U Sports regulations.
  • Uphold policies and procedures of the Athletics Department and Mount Allison University.
  • Assist in the development and administration of the University's Athlete Code of Conduct.
  • Educate and monitor student-athletes to ensure their compliance with all team, departmental, university, and AUS/U Sports policies, rules and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a positive relationship with students, staff, and faculty of the University, as well as with community-based organizations.
  • Perform related administrative duties as required.

Qualifications/skills

  • Minimum of 7 years coaching experience
  • Coaching experience as a head coach will be considered an asset
  • Coaching experience at the U Sports level will be considered an asset
  • Technical knowledge and ability (NCCP certification preferred)
  • Detailed knowledge of Atlantic University Sports (AUS)/U Sports regulations
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and motivational skills
  • Ability to align plans and actions with the intended vision and direction in a manner that optimizes organizational performance and the achievement of stated objectives
  • Proven ability in hiring, supervising, and evaluating personnel and student-athletes
  • Proven ability in cultivating, managing, and sustaining effective working relationships, preferably within a University/College environment, as well as with community and sport-based organizations
  • Demonstrated experience and success as fundraiser preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred (e.g. Kinesiology, Recreation or Sports Administration)
