The department of Indigenous Affairs is seeking a dynamic, results-oriented, and seasoned leader to fill the position of Assistant Deputy Minister.

Who we are:
The Department of Indigenous Affairs oversees government to government relationship which is multifaceted and complex with Indigenous Nations. It is the responsibility of the Department is to create an environment in which meaningful dialogue and negotiations to uphold and strengthen our collective treaty relationship between the Province and First Nations.

What you will do:
As the Assistant Deputy Minister reporting to the Deputy Minister of the Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA), you will play a key role in fostering strong, meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities. Leading a dedicated team of experts, you will work together to shape and support the Government of New Brunswick's commitment to rebuild the government to government through meaningful engagement and strategic partnership with Indigenous representatives, ensuring alignment with DIA's initiatives and goals.
Your role will be pivotal in providing the Deputy Minister with strategic guidance and support, ensuring that the interests of Indigenous Nations and/or communities are represented and advanced in important intergovernmental discussions and partnerships.

  • Leading and Empowering Your Team: Supporting your team's growth and success by providing them with opportunities to thrive, recognizing their achievements, and managing challenges in a positive way.
  • Turning Vision into Action: Translating the organization's overarching vision into clear strategies and goals, and guiding the team to achieve these with a focus on high performance management.
  • Strengthening Partnerships: Nurturing relationships within and outside the organization, building strategic alliances, and negotiating effectively to ensure all voices are heard and respected.
  • Providing Thoughtful Advice: Offering timely, evidence based advice and information to the Deputy Minister and elected government, helping guide important decision making processes.
  • Ensuring Compliance: Overseeing the adherence to legislative and regulatory requirements while ensuring best practices across all operations.
  • Managing Resources Responsibly: Working within the budget to ensure that resources are effectively allocated in alignment with GNB's long term fiscal framework

Need to have:
The successful candidate will be a sound professional who possesses strong leadership skills and experience in successfully leading complex initiatives.

Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Resource Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or other related discipline and a minimum of ten (10) years of related progressively responsible senior management experience including:

  • A minimum of 4 years of extensive experience in engaging and negotiating with Indigenous Nations and the Federal Government.
  • Experience working with First Nation communities, including demonstrated experience in understanding and respecting Aboriginal rights and title as well as a demonstrated experience in understanding Indigenous Nations perspectives on Aboriginal and treaty rights.
  • Experience in the interpretation and application of provincial and/or federal legislations; and
  • Six (6) years of experience managing staff and leading/coaching teams of which 2 years was leading at a director/executive director level.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to those candidates that have:

  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with senior provincial and federal officials in relation to Indigenous Nation matters.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management and leading through times of change.
  • Demonstrated experience in rightsholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience in ffacilitation and/or mediation.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Salary:
Pay Band 11 - $137,384 to $151,164 per annum.
