Requirements:
- Law degree (e.g. LLB or JD) from a recognized university.
- Minimum of 5 years (10 - 15) is preferred, relevant experience in the practice of law directly related to the key responsibilities of this position.
- Member of the Law Society of New Brunswick (LSNB) in good standing or qualified to become a member of the LSNB.
- Substantial experience in real estate.
- Experience negotiating, drafting and reviewing contracts/agreements.
- An interest in municipal law and a strong attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize and balance competing priorities with tight deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
- Fluency in both official languages would be considered an asset.

The City of Fredericton is seeking a highly organized, dedicated and detail-oriented professional to join our Legal Division as a Staff Solicitor. Reporting to the City Solicitor, you will provide legal advice and services to the corporation, helping the City of Fredericton deliver its services effectively. What You'll Do:
- Provide competent and timely general solicitor services to the City of Fredericton, including but not limited to corporate and commercial matters, real estate, contract/agreement drafting, review and negotiation, procurement report review and the provision of legal advice to senior management.
- Support and collaborate with the Real Estate Manager to draft complex and unique agreements, leases, easements, restrictive covenants, and other real estate documents ensuring due diligence as well as provide advice and recommendations on the structure of real estate transactions and other land matters such as development agreements.
- Review and assess issues affecting legal title to real estate, surveys, and due diligence searches related to transactions.
- Support client departments on various matters by reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on a wide range of agreements and other documents for the delivery of municipal services.
- Collaborate with client departments to advance agreements for all aspects of the City's business and advise clients on rights, liabilities, benefits, and risks of action under various agreements.
- Provide high-value, proactive, strategic and timely legal advice.
- Attend City Council and Standing Committee meetings of Council, as required.
- Conduct legal research and provide legal opinions on a variety of matters.
- Maintain knowledge and expertise (including statutes, case law, and trends) in municipal law, real estate law and procurement law.
- Anticipate and identify legal issues to protect the City's interests.
- Contribute to by-laws, policies and procedures.
- Direct, monitor, and advise external legal counsel in area of assigned responsibility, as required.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and participate as an effective team member.
- Represent the City in provincial court for municipal by-law ticket prosecutions when the staff solicitor/litigation is not available.
- Perform other duties as assigned and as required.
