The St. John's Port Authority is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Staff Accountant. This position is accountable for Accounts Receivable, cash management, fixed assets and related accounting and budgeting functions, maintenance and support of the Authority's PORTS vessel activity and billing system, as well as providing a broad range of administrative support.

Specific accountabilities will include the following:

· Accounts Receivable & System Management - provides accurate and timely production of day-to-day accounting activities of the Accounts Receivable function. This position provides support in the operation of the PORTS Vessel Activity and Billing System, including liaising with the software providers with respect to general maintenance and potential upgrades/improvements.

· General Ledger- utilizing EVENT accounting software, prepares various journal entries, maintains Batch Control Logs, completes month-end closings and reconciliation of accounts. This position assists in internal and external audits, as well as other related accounting functions.

· Cash Management - monitors cash receipts from customers and disbursements to vendors, contractors, etc., prepares deposits, completes month-end bank reconciliations and prepares regular cash flow statements and analysis.

· Fixed Assets - conducts the annual count of Fixed Assets and assists in the maintenance of the Capital Asset accounting module.

· Financial Reporting and Administration General - prepares various financial summaries for internal purposes; prepares various financial reports for external agencies; assists in the preparation of the annual Operating and Capital Budgets and the Business Plan; and assists in the development of policies and procedures as they pertain to Finance, Administration and IT.

Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of general accounting principles, experience with computerized accounting systems and MS Office, and strong organizational and communication skills are required. This desired knowledge and skill may have been obtained through a university degree, or completion of a three-year post-secondary program in Accounting or Business Administration, enrolment in a recognized professional accounting program and a minimum of three years' experience. French language skills would be an asset. The incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid Marine Transportation Security Clearance.
