JOB PURPOSE

As a member of an interdisciplinary team, provides quality patient care within the scope of professional nursing practice to patients and families during ante-partum, labour and delivery, post-partum, newborn and/or surgical post-operative experience. Participates in the delivery of care services to medical, surgical and obstetrical patients. Performs other duties as assigned including ambulance transfer. May be reassigned throughout the facility as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active registration with NANB.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Current NRP certification
  • Minimum 6 months recent clinical experience in Labour and Delivery
  • Demonstrated assessment skills and ability to function independently with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations, rapidly changing priorities and complex patient care needs.
  • Demonstrated teaching, communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills
  • Have completed the 20-hour breastfeeding course or an equivalent, or willing to attain within 6 months of hire.
  • FHS course done or willing to attain within 6mos of hire.
  • High regard for confidentiality and advocacy
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position, including ambulance transfers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates an understanding of Family Centered Maternal and Newborn principles
  • Assess the health care needs of patients including patients assigned to other health care personnel
  • Identifies patient needs and problems utilizing an assessment tool
  • Identifies needs effecting discharge planning and potential services required at home
  • Formulates objectives specific to the patient needs
  • Provides health teaching, counseling, health promotion to individuals or groups
  • Provides nursing care required to achieve the patient's desired outcomes
  • Evaluates outcomes of nursing actions for further assessment and planning
  • Utilizes effective communication skills to achieve a helping relationship
  • Supports new employees during orientation
  • Provides support and works with student personnel to ensure a positive learning experience
  • Works co-operatively with allied health personnel and delegates, consults and refers appropriately
  • Directs and supervises non-professional staff
  • Interact with the patient care team to identify, plan, implement and evaluate changes
  • Demonstrates initiative for personal professional development
  • Obtains and maintains required training and qualifications (i.e., Professional Registration, CPR, WHIMMIS, Fire/Disaster, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Fetal Monitoring, Breastfeeding Essentials Course, and Delegated Medical Function Certifications)
  • Participates in programs promoting quality improvement on nursing unit
  • Demonstrates competent use of equipment used in this nursing care area (i.e. Breast Pumps, Electronic Fetal Monitor, Infant scales, Vital Sign Monitors, Bilimeteres, etc.
  • Patient Safety is a critical aspect of quality healthcare. Successful candidates must be accountable for creating a culture of safety, working as a team, communicating effectively, and responding to adverse events.
