Job Description

In this Senior Counsel role, you will be a member of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Legal team in Toronto. You will provide advice with respect to ESG reporting and disclosure matters for the enterprise. The role provides an opportunity to work in an exciting, important and rapidly evolving field, while gaining exposure to a range of stakeholders and leaders, both within TD Legal and across the enterprise.

The general accountabilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching, advising and providing oversight in connection with ESG-related obligations and goals for business lines, functions and/or for the enterprise as a whole.

  • Identifying key legal risks and mitigation strategies, while ensuring awareness among relevant stakeholders and other members of the TD Legal team.

  • Oversight of external counsel performing work in areas of responsibility. Remain current on evolving regulatory requirements and expectations in connection with a range of ESG issues, including climate change, sustainable financing, human rights and corporate governance.

  • Support development and/or implementation of policies, procedures, and solutions that mitigate risk and enable the achievement of ESG-related priorities.

  • Contribute to high priority special projects and other Legal Department initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in Ontario.

  • Relevant experience as a lawyer working with a major law firm or in-house (corporate or regulatory).

  • Experience working on environment/climate-related issues, including knowledge of relevant standards and initiatives, would be an asset (though not a requirement).

  • Highly effective communicator (written and verbal).

  • Strong judgment and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong technology aptitude including (i) proficiency with standard office software and ability to learn and apply new technologies in work environment and (ii) capacity to understand current and emerging technologies in the industry and how they affect business objectives.

  • Ability to identify problems and barriers, and effectively implement solutions to advance business strategy.

  • Operates with creativity and innovation; seeks different perspectives and new ideas.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.

  • Knowledge Management – Understands the value of knowledge management, builds and supports systems and tools that efficiently connect people to the knowledge they need to do their job.

  • Contribute to high-priority TD Legal Department initiatives, including knowledge management and workflow improvement.

  • Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external business and corporate area partners.

  • Ability to interact and effectively advise senior officers within TD.

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills and ability to provide advice in a clear, concise and time-sensitive manner.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.

  • Ability to think independently and critically and make risk-based decisions.

  • Ability to stay energized, productive and focused in the face of challenges, ambiguity, change or strenuous demands, including the ability to create a supportive environment that helps others become more resilient and productive.

  • Ability to be "solutions-oriented", have excellent business and legal judgment and an aptitude for working effectively on cross-functional teams.
