Location: Office of Government Members, Fredericton, New Brunswick
Position Type: Full-Time, in-person position with possibility of work from home (TBC)
Education: Bachelor's degree related to Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field. Relevant work experience in government, policy analysis, or advocacy is also considered an asset.
Salary Range: $55,000-$75,000 per annum commensurate with experience and qualifications.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legislative Researcher to join our team. The ideal candidate will be fluently bilingual in French and English, possess exceptional research and communication abilities, and possess a thorough understanding of Legislative procedures.
In addition to providing research and speechwriting support to Members, this role will also provide dedicated support to the Government House Leader. Previous experience in a similar role is considered an asset. Experience in a political, legislative, or public policy environment is an asset as well as familiarity with New Brunswick's political landscape, key policy issues, and regional dynamics.
The successful candidate will work and collaborate closely with the Director of Legislative Affairs in the Office of the Premier and the Director of Communications in the Office of Government Members.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft speeches, talking points, key messages, correspondence, and other documents for Government MLAs for use in legislative debates.
  • Collaborate with Members to develop strategies and ensure they are equipped with the necessary research and resources.
  • Assist the Government House Leader with administrative tasks, scheduling, and coordination of legislative activities.
  • Prepare detailed reports, briefs, and summaries to support legislative initiatives.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislative procedures, current events, political developments, and legislative changes.
  • Translate documents and communications as needed to support bilingual operations.
  • Conduct in-depth research on legislative matters, policy issues, and committee activities to support all Government MLAs.
  • Prepare concise and accurate summaries, reports, and briefings tailored to the needs of individual MLAs or the caucus.
  • Analyze legislative documents, bills, and regulations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in legislative research, policy analysis, or a related area.
  • Strong understanding of legislative procedures and processes.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Proficiency in using research databases, legislative tracking tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.

Superior written and spoken communication skills in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be required.
Asset Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the legislative process and government structures.
  • Experience working in a governmental or public policy setting.

Additional Information:

  • Work Hours: This position requires a standard work week of 36.25 hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings or weekends based on the legislative calendar. Evenings will be required when the Legislature is in session. This is an in-person position with a possibility of some work from home options.
  • Conditions of Employment: The successful candidate must undergo a security clearance process, including a criminal background check. This role also requires the ability to handle confidential information with the utmost discretion.
