The Finance Department at Tangerine is primarily responsible for the capture and reporting of financial information for internal and external audiences in accordance with applicable standards. Specifically, Tangerine Finance manages accounting, recording and reporting of accounting and tax information. The Finance Department continually assesses risks and controls and takes action to ensure there is an effective system of internal control over financial reporting and other Finance functions. Finance also supports the business to ensure the successful implementation of corporate initiatives.

The Manager, General and Tax Accounting is primarily responsible for the accuracy and reliability of general accounting (operating expenses, mutual funds, subsidiary accounting, and deposit products) in compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). This individual will also be involved in special projects relating to new initiatives, act as back up for the tax function, conduct on-going reviews of efficiency of processes, prepare and develop reports, in addition to training, managing and developing staff. The Manager will report directly to the Senior Manager, General and Tax Accounting.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for general accounting, including accrual process for operating expenses, mutual fund line of business, deposit products, subsidiary accounting and related continuity schedules in accordance with IFRS.
  • Review for accuracy and approve daily accounting entries prepared by general accounting and reconciliation staff.
  • Review daily/monthly deposit product and consumer loan interest reasonability.
  • Oversee daily FX reasonability for OTC transactions
  • Provide guidance, support and feedback to bank-wide departmental designates in the monthly accruals process
  • Prepare monthly operating expense variance analysis for internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare monthly analysis reports and assist in the development of other financial reports as needed
  • Assist with the quarterly/annual operating expense analysis for the Bank and subsidiary board of director meetings
  • Assist in tax function as required, including but not limited to the review of income tax provisions and GST/HST filings and schedules and responding to queries from taxation authorities and Scotiabank
  • Prepare financial statement disclosure notes as assigned.
  • Administer OBI and PSFT user access applicable to the GA and tax area, and requesting GL account (and cost center) for use in Tangerine chart of accounts (COFA)
  • Maintain complete accurate and current financial records in a manner consistent with IFRS.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors and handle all their queries independently and satisfactorily
  • Establish and maintain procedures to assist implementation of new/changed products, systems and processes
  • Ensure the desk top procedures of the key processes are updated as required
  • Be responsible for understanding and complying with the Regulatory Compliance Framework including the Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and Sanctions Policy and all AML related policies, procedures and controls within the department
  • Contribute to or lead assigned projects
  • Train, manage and develop accounting staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • University or College Degree
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience, preferably in the financial services industry
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Completion of a financial accounting designation or relevant experience is required
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and reporting standards (IFRS) as related to provisions, lease accounting, revenue recognition and consolidation is required
  • Good accounting knowledge of banking products
  • Proficiency in Excel and MS Office applications
  • Strong ability to "piece together the entire puzzle" by gathering information from various sources/departments/people/reports, etc.
  • Able to make well-reasoned and thought out decisions
  • Able to work independently and exercise good professional judgment
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Detail-oriented with an extremely inquisitive/skeptic mind-set
  • Effective communicator and team player
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
