JOB PURPOSE
Perioperative/Perianesthesia nursing encompasses professional and clinical nursing activities which focus on identifying and meeting the needs of the surgical patient while applying the nursing process in a caring manner. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing individualized patient care and for having a working knowledge of / and to adhere to departmental Policies and Procedures, and Standard of Care for all 3 areas within the Day Surgery department (OR/PACU/DaySurgery)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing.
- Current registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
- Post- basic or post- graduate course in O.R. nursing encompassing all surgical specialties required
- Recent Operating Room experience (minimum of 1950 hours) within the last five years required.
- One year of experience in surgical services that includes PACU, Intensive or Critical Care within the last 5 years preferred.
- Ability to work between St Joseph's Hospital Operating room and Saint John Regional Hospital Operating room.
- Current Perioperative Certification is an asset.
- Experience in extubating and airway management.
- Experience and competency working with invasive monitoring and ventilators.
- Willingness to perform charge duties.
- Current certification (or willing to obtain certification) in IV Therapy, IV Meds, Venipuncture.
- Current BLS for Healthcare Providers
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
- Ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Good work record.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The role of the Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse includes but is not limited to:
Planning care based on the appropriate standards (ORNAC/NAPAN Standards for Practice), plus individualized planning.
Patient Advocacy: The Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse responds to the communicated and the uncommunicated needs of the surgical patient offering advocacy, assistance, and support through their surgical experience.
Continuity of Care: The Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse provides continuity of care as the link between the nursing units and the operating room during the patient's preoperative, intraoperative and immediate postoperative phases.
Focus of Care: The Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse plans and organizes all activities to meet individual patient needs. These needs become the focus of the registered nurse's activities.
Coordinator of Activities: The Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse coordinates and ensures the activities of the multidisciplinary team meet ORNAC Standards and comply with Corporate and Departmental Policies and Procedures. The registered nurse also assists with, or functions in, an educational and /or mentor role.
Clinical Skills: The Perioperative/Perianesthesia nurse's clinical skills are based on standards and theory learned from nursing, the sciences, and humanities. The scope of practice will be based on ORNAC,NAPAN and CNA Standards in conjunction with Corporate and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
