Job Summary
This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: Family/All Ages or Adult. This is an advance practice role providing professional, analytical, and autonomous comprehensive range of health services to clients and patients. The primary role involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating substance use disorders in consultation with the patient's acute care treatment team. The NP will provide education and training to other health care provides on substance abuse disorders and harm reduction practice and treatment as required. The role also includes supporting withdrawal management for other substances when appropriate, initiating Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), conducting health assessments, diagnosing conditions, referring to appropriate providers for follow-up. This work is performed through a client-centered approached and is provided from a Harm Reduction and Trauma Informed lens. Use of a personal vehicle will be a requirement as the NP will travel to acute care sites as needed.
NL Health Services is pleased to support its Acute Care Harm Reduction Team in achieving its goals of providing exceptional and high-quality care to vulnerable clients within the St. John's-Metro region, and beyond. The Acute Care Harm Reduction Team's mandate is to provide harm reduction services. Many of these individuals are navigating complex mental health and/or substance use conditions and often experience marginalization because of their circumstances.

Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs. and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books, supplies, and sometimes children up to 25 lbs. Occasionally, may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs.
Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks.
When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness.
Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessment and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.
Job Qualifications
Completion of an approved/recognized Nurse Practitioner program is required.
Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of NL and Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a Nurse Practitioner (Family/All Ages or Adult) with the CRNNL is required.
A minimum of five years clinical experience within the last seven years in Mental Health and Addictions
Current BCLS Certification is required.
Authorized to prescribe OAT (Suboxone and Methadone) by the CRNNL- or willingness to complete within a 6 month timeframe from hiring date.
Possessed strong abilities in the areas of collaboration, clinical reasoning, professional development, interpersonal effectiveness, conflict management and teamwork.
Demonstrated progressive clinical leadership skills.
Possessed strong communication, problem solving, decision-making, and teaching skills.
Demonstrated ability to function autonomously in an advanced practice role.
Support and participate in research to improve practice and client outcomes.
Demonstrated skills in computer and database management skills
Previous work in harm reduction and work with vulnerable populations is considered an asset.
A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver's License and the use of a private vehicle are conditions of employment.
