In this role, you will :
Responsibility 1: As part of a rostered team of expert surge personnel, deploys in operational leadership roles in Canada and internationally to emergency contexts. Typical deployment length is 1-3 months.
- Works in collaboration with staff and volunteers, local authorities and affected communities to deliver emergency humanitarian services in Canada and internationally.
- Support global and domestic health emergencies in a leadership capacity, representing the priorities of the Canadian Red Cross and managing a team of technical experts.
- Oversees the coordination of support to affected communities and local Red Cross teams in responding to disasters and crisis events. The position is responsible for managing the successful implementation of the emergency operation and reinforcing local teams.
- Internationally, is responsible for ensuring CRC program implementation in the field in coordination with the affected National Society and the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. The position is responsible for the successful delivery of assistance.
- Domestically, supports as technical and leadership capacity in augmentation of geographic-based Red Cross teams. The position is responsible for operational leadership and coordination of large-scale responses.
- Provides operational leadership mentoring and coaching as required to build local capacity domestically and internationally.
Responsibility 2: Home Based Duties
- Responsible for supporting Red Cross readiness and response projects while not on deployment.
- Assigned to specific technical departments such as Health in Emergencies, Public Health, and/or domestic response, the position will have oversight on specific files and activities throughout the year.
- Strengthening operational leadership through coaching and mentoring peers, curriculum development, and supporting lessons learned initiatives.
- Maintain personal readiness including but not limited to trainings, medical clearances, and competency development.
What we are looking for :
- University degree in relevant field, preference for international humanitarian studies, disaster and/or emergency management, Health in Emergencies/Public Health, project management or equivalent.
- 5 years' experience working for humanitarian aid organization in emergency response, global health emergencies, and conflicts contexts in developing countries.
- Experience leading teams and managing response operations.
- Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining relationships with partners, external actors.
- Strong people management skills (ability to mentor, motivate, support teams).
- Problem solver and capable to take decisions and directing others in conditions of uncertainty.
- Strong initiative, communication, and analytical skills.
- Ability to deliver under tight timelines in ambiguous and challenging environments.
- Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint).
- Health background (education and/or experience) is considered a strong asset.
- Field experience with the Red Cross Movement is considered an asset.
- Field experience with the Canadian Red Cross domestically is considered an asset.
- Fluency in English is required. French would be considered a strong asset.
- Planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting skills is an asset.
- Strong financial management skills (ability to develop, manage and monitor budgets) is considered an asset.
Working Conditions :
- Travel to both natural disasters and conflict settings on short notice will be frequently required. Field deployments can involve working in environments that are unstable and with unpredictable access to basic services in emergency contexts. Deployment work involves stressful and often ambiguous conditions.
