The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association and the Department of Health and Community Services have established a Family Practice Renewal Program (FPRP) to improve the delivery and effectiveness of family practice in the province, as part of a more integrated primary health care system. As a core initiative of the FPRP, the Northern NL and Labrador Family Practice Network (FPN) program, located across Northern NL and Labrador, is designed to develop regional initiatives to improve patient care, help family physicians work with their NLHS Zone to address common health care goals in their communities, and enhance professional satisfaction for physicians within their geographical jurisdiction. The FPN is a non-profit corporation led by a physician Board of Directors.
Primary Responsibilities
The FPN Executive Director is a full-time position reporting to the Northern NL and Labrador FPN Board of Directors, receiving supervision and direction through the Board Chair, with support and oversight from FPRP and the Family Practice Renewal Committee. The FPN Executive Director will use a community development approach to manage change, engaging physicians as FPN members, and supporting the membership in its collaboration with the NLHS Zone and other strategic partners. This position will work with the Board to develop and implement strategic plans in support of FPN goals and in alignment with the FPRP strategic plan. The FPN Executive Director is expected to work independently, across FPN communities throughout their region, and attend and support regular Board meetings.
Excellent leadership, facilitation, strategic thinking, and analytical skills are required, including ability to: develop programs and policies; develop, manage and implement concurrent projects/budgets; engage and build effective relationships with physician members and other stakeholders; use good judgment to effectively handle sensitive or confidential matters and solve problems/conflicts; work in an unstructured environment; use flexible and creative approaches to solve problems; and juggle competing priorities.
Qualifications: University degree or equivalent in health/health administration/business administration, community development, relevant social sciences, or related field. Five or more years of progressive management experience, preferably in health care and/or the non-profit sector. Knowledge of the NL primary health care system including a good understanding of NLHS and primary care environment. Previous experience working with family physicians, other health professionals, or Boards of Directors would be considered an asset. Proficiency in the use of MS Office software is required. A suitable combination of education and experience would be considered.
This position is currently a home-based position within NL that requires schedule flexibility to attend early morning, evening and occasional weekend meetings and events. Frequent travel will be required to ensure local support to multiple FPN communities, engage membership, as well as to periodic provincial meetings. The Northern NL and Labrador Practice Network provides a competitive compensation package.
