Job Summary
The Dental Assistant IIA assists the Dentist and the patient in the delivery of dental care services. Responsibilities include planning the methods, tools and solutions to be used in procedures, prepares the clinic operatory room for each patient treatment, explains the treatment steps that will follow and the expected impact on the patient, performs a review of the patient's medical record, current prescribed medications, dental referral, and takes preliminary x-rays and impressions. Also, provides independent, unsupervised direct contact patient care procedures including dental hygiene procedures and provides assistance to the Dentist at chair side and carries out infection control procedures according to hospital protocol. The Dental Assistant IIA also conducts various activities in the dental laboratory, such as constructing models for dental appliances and mixing dental plaster to pour and separate dental impressions. Prepares these models for transport to outside laboratory for final appliance construction Other related duties including, but not limited to, preparing necessary paperwork for dental patients, maintaining an inventory of supplies and scheduling appointments as required.

This dental assistant requires completion of some clerical duties and rotation through the dental clinic, the Janeway operating room and St. Clare's operating room.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limed to):
Class regularly places protective apron (weighs about 10 lbs.) while getting x-ray machine into place. Occasionally moves other objects such as dental operator's cart and portable dental x-ray machine which are heavy and awkward to move (over 50 lbs.).
Standing, sitting and walking are regularly required to perform work duties while in surgery. Position is regularly seated on a rolling stool opposite the dentist and must move forwards and backwards on the stool to carry out tasks required and sometimes get up from the stool to reach something in a high cupboard.
Position is constantly reaching and twisting for supplies and instruments, adjusting the light, pulling open drawers and cupboards, stretching arms over the patient for safety reasons when dentist is giving an injection.
Manual and physical activities include fine finger or precision work to use equipment and using hand tools that require accurate control and steadiness.

Job Qualifications
Successful completion of a recognized/approved two-year Dental Assistant Program and successful completion of the National Dental Assisting Examination Board exam is required.
Current and continuing licensure with the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Board is required.
Current and continuing memberships with the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Assistants Association and the Canadian Dental Assistants Association is required.
CPR certification.
Experience working with children and/or experience working with individuals with development disabilities is an asset.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
