The Dicta Typist provides technical support to the Health Care Services Department's Consultants, medical specialists who treat injured workers, and external physicians who perform Permanent Functional Impairment (PFI) assessments.

The primary responsibility is the transcription of dictation from a digital dictation system. As a Dicta Typist you will utilize your extensive knowledge in medical terminology, covering a wide range of medical specialties, as well as your understanding of the complex nature of how these terms are used.

Role Responsibilities

  • Providing accurate transcription of information, including cross-referencing of injured worker personal and claim related identifiers, physician numbers, hospital records, etc.
  • Ensuring records are sent to the Client Service Centre for updating of client files.
  • Communicating with specialists for clarification of content in medical reports.
  • Protecting privacy by ensuring correspondence content is correct and addressed to the appropriate recipient.
  • Distributing confidential medical information to hospitals, specialist clinics and other health care providers.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

Educational requirements:

  • Completion of a two-year Office Administration program, supplemented by a Medical Terminology course.

Work experience:

  • Minimum of two years' experience in a medical setting.
  • Experience in word processing and dicta-typing using Microsoft Word.

Position specific requirements:

  • Demonstrated, minimum typing speed of 53 words per minute.

Knowledge-based requirements:

  • Keen knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
  • Working knowledge of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, 2022, legislation, policies and procedures.

Soft skills:

  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Use of independent judgement in the performance of duties.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to client service.

What success looks like in this role

  • Making a significant impact on WorkplaceNL's goal of reducing claim costs and duration by providing accurate, timely services to health care professionals, injured workers, WorkplaceNL staff and the general public.
  • Transcribing at a high rate of speed and accuracy. Producing about 600 lines per day and delivering on WorkplaceNL's turnaround times.
  • Applying medical terminology covering a wide range of medical specialties, including: Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Psychiatry, Plastic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Respiratory Radiology, etc., for provincewide users of this digital dictation system.
  • Being part of the Health Care Services Team and supporting their efforts to meet departmental goals.

Experience and an educational equivalency may be considered.
