Requirements:

  • A graduate degree in planning from a recognized professional planning school is preferred but those with an undergraduate degree will also be considered.
  • No professional planning experience is necessary but a desire to learn and develop skills as a practicing planner is a must.
  • Eligibility for provisional membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP and/or eligibility to become a New Brunswick Registered Professional Planner (RPP) in New Brunswick;
  • The ability to communicate in both official languages will be considered an asset but is not a requirement.

The successful candidate will join a talented team of professional planners delivering both current planning and policy development services to the community. They will have the opportunity to develop a broad range of real-world urban planning skills in a busy department. Fredericton has an award-winning city center plan and an updated municipal plan with an emphasis on complete new neighbourhoods, increased density, and a commitment to infill and new development in the City's core.

The Planner will play an integral role in development and policy projects. The position will also provide valuable experience in processing planning applications. We are looking for an entry-level planner with a passion for planning, energy, and initiative. We require excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate should have an interest in public engagement and presentation and be keen to further develop those skillsets.

What You Will Do:

  • Works as part of a team in policy planning projects such as secondary municipal plans on behalf of the Department.
  • Participates in review/updates to policy documents such as the Zoning By-law, Secondary Municipal Plans, and other policy matters.
  • Prepares and presents Planning Reports for the Planning Advisory Committee.
  • Gathers and analyzes economic and statistical data.
  • Advises the public on zoning matters and other development control/enforcement issues.
  • Attends regular community and planning advisory committee meetings; prepares reports, memos, and zoning letters.
  • Other duties as required.

What You Bring:

  • Sound knowledge of planning theory, public engagement techniques and policy creation would be considered an asset.
  • An interest to learn more about development control.
  • Excellent oral communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • Eligibility for provisional membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), eligibility to become as New Brunswick Registered Professional Planner (RPP) in New Brunswick;
  • The ability to communicate in both official languages will be considered an asset but is not a requirement.
