Position Description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a nine (9) month per year probationary laboratory instructor to commence August 11, 2025. Pending on satisfactory performance, the contract may be renewable on an annual basis. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Applicants should have either have an MSc degree in the Earth, Climate, or Environmental Sciences or a related field. Candidates will have demonstrated excellence, or show promise of excellence, and interest in undergraduate laboratory and field teaching and experiential learning. The position will support labs in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, Climate and Environment program, and Aquatic Resources program.

The position requires oversight and management of equipment and lab space, and assistance with lab-based course exercises, and marking of lab-based assignments. The ideal candidate should have or be willing to develop basic skills in: computational data management and exercises using a range of programs and software covering spreadsheets and plotting (e.g., Excel, R), basic scripting (Python) and GIS software; management of technical equipment for field components of courses, including collection of weather data, stream flow data, and water quality data; familiarity with basic lab and field safety.

The ideal candidate should have capacity to teach labs across a broad range of Earth and Environmental Science courses in the department as well as environmental labs in the Climate & Environment and Aquatic Resources Programs. Courses may include Introductory Earth Science, Introduction to the Climate System, Introduction to Environmental Systems, Environment, Climate, and Resources, Understanding Climate Change, Regional Weather and Climate, Data Analysis in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Hydrology, Earth Observing, and Environmental Earth Science Field Courses.
