WorkplaceNL's Health and Safety Officer plays an instrumental role in WorkplaceNL fulfilling its commitment to its employees to provide a safe and healthy workplace. Reporting to the Director of People and Culture, you will lead the development, delivery and evaluation of the organization's occupational health, safety and wellness programs that adhere to standards, best practices, our Collective Agreement, and legislation requirements. You will work with WorkplaceNL employees, supervisors and senior leaders to identify hazards, respond to workplace incidents, implement controls, identify trends, and evaluate programming, all with a focus of preventing injury and psychological harm to our employees.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver, and continuously monitor WorkplaceNL's health, safety and wellness programming (policies, procedures, processes, safe work practices, and tools).
  • Support the activities of various health, safety and wellness committees.
  • Maintain statistics, trend analysis and reporting of all elements of our health, safety and wellness programs.
  • Conduct training needs assessments on all elements of our programming and deliver accordingly.
  • Ensure that workstation reviews are followed through and that required equipment is procured.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • A degree with a concentration in occupational health and safety management supplemented by a minimum of three years of experience in building a workplace health and safety culture.
  • Extensive knowledge of health and safety legislation, standards and best practices.
  • A St. John Ambulance first-aid instructor certification or willingness and ability to obtain such certification.
  • A safety designation would be an asset.
  • Well-developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills combined with abilities to work independently and make decisions using sound judgment.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships and communicate effectively with stakeholders including our employees, supervisors, union leadership and senior leadership.
  • Ability to develop partnerships and networks, set direction, take initiative and evaluate outcomes to create results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to engage others and facilitate discussions and learning by communicating effectively using appropriate communication media and learning modalities.

What success looks like in this role

  • You are able to apply your professional knowledge and understanding in a variety of occupational health, safety and wellness areas (leadership and administration; hazard assessment evaluation and control; safe work practices; education and training; workplace inspections; incident investigations; emergency preparedness, ergonomics, and the factors that contribute to psychological health and safety) to promptly identify and resolve health and safety issues in the workplace, with the goal of reducing claim costs and duration while promoting a safer workplace.
  • You remain current on OHS legislative changes, standards and best practices through liaising with associations, educational institutions and other boards and bodies to identify emerging trends in workplace health and safety issues.
  • You ensure WorkplaceNL is compliant with the PRIME program and all aspects of the program are actioned and documented.
