Demands, duties, qualifications
Definition of Work: As part of the Mental Health and Addictions team, provides direct home support and community access to clients with severe and persistent mental illness who are receiving services with the Case Management Program in Port Aux Basques. Provides a full range of services including assisting clients with life skills (cooking, shopping, money management, housekeeping, making and attending appointments); encouraging personal case; assisting with medication compliance; observing for changes in health status and reporting same to Team; encouraging and accompanying clients in leisure and recreational activities or community events; advocating on behalf of clients for resources; and providing emotional support.

While the primary function of this position is to support the operations of the Case Management Program, the Mental Health Support Worker may be involved in the support of individuals with mental health and addictions needs throughout various mental health and addictions programs and services.

Qualifications: Knowledge of mental illness and have experience supporting people with daily living. The worker should be able to provide encouragement and assistance to clients in a manner that is non-judgmental and promotes independence. The individual should have the skills to assist in motivating clients to work toward achieving their fullest potential. Graduation from high school with post-secondary training in social science or a health related field is required. Must also have demonstrated ability working with people with complex mental health needs. This would include illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bi-polar Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder as well as individuals who experience significant disability from other disorders. A certificate of conduct is required. Must have the ability to work a flexible work schedule to include days, evenings and weekends.
