The Mawlugutinej Mental Wellness Services Inc. is an Indigenous-led, community-based team that provides mental health and addictions support and services to our five partner Mi'kmaq communities: Natoaganeg (Eel Ground), Metepenagiag (Red Bank), Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church), Pabineau and Ugpi'ganjig (Eel River Bar). Mawlugutinej is governed by a board of directors that is represented by the five Mi'kmaq partner communities, Horizon Health Network, VitaliteNB, Indigenous Services Canada and the Rising Sun Treatment Centre to ensure a culturally safe approach to service delivery.
Mawlugutinej is seeking a mental health clinician to become an integral member of its multi-disciplinary team. The role will collaborate with other community agencies and professionals to provide a range of mental health related services to members of the five First Nation communities. Providing accessible, timely and culturally safe mental health services to our community members is the primary objective of this role. This position will primarily serve the communities of EsgenoÔpetitj, Natoaganeg & Metepenagiag.
Key Responsibilities
Working with the Mawlugutinej Mental Wellness Team to provide Mental Health Counselling & Addictions support and services to the 5 partnering communities:
- Assessing clients; developing and implementing treatment plans
- Developing and facilitating therapeutic interventions for individuals and groups
- Coordinating services and advocating for clients
- Providing emergency/crises intervention/stabilization services
- Maintaining clinical records and documentation electronically and in writing
- Consult and collaborate with other professionals and services providers
Qualifications
Master's degree in one of the following disciplines: Social Work, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Nursing, or comparable degree with strong clinical skills. Currently registered or eligible to be registered with respective professional association. Minimum five years related experience in providing a range of community-based mental health services or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A solid understanding of the colonial/historical impact on Indigenous mental health and a trauma-informed approach is foundational.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and healing practices of this territory
- Awareness of the recent, historical, and intergenerational trauma that Indigenous people have and continue to experience
- Experience in working with Indigenous populations with mental health or substance use issues.
- Understanding and respecting both Indigenous Traditional and Western approaches to healing
- Experience working on a collaborative team
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Adept in conflict resolution, non-violent crisis intervention, suicide prevention and life promotion.
- Strong collaborative skills in working with partner agencies
- Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives, establish priorities, manage time and resources.
- Proficient computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet, E-mail.
Special Requirements
- Recent and successful Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Checks.
- Uptake of cultural training sessions prior to working with communities
- Flexibility in working environments (i.e.: school environment, home visiting)
- Proven ability to work within a team environment with respect to professionalism, confidentiality, cooperation, sensitivity and cultural safety
- CPR Certification maintained annually
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to speak the Mi'kmaq language is an asset
- Ability to travel to provide services to Esgenoopetitj, Natoaganeg and Metepenagiag
Main Office: Natoaganeg Community Development Centre, 40 Micmac Road, Eel Ground, NB
Program Location: Five northeastern NB First Nations, primarily EsgenoÔpetitj, Natoaganeg Metepenagiag.
Hours of Work: 75 hours biweekly, with occasional evenings and weekends as required
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience
Term: One-year term - possibility of renewal based on funding
