The Department of Justice and Public Safety is dedicated to the rule of law, the promotion of the public interest, and the impartial administration of justice and works to improve the safety, security and resiliency of communities and citizens. Highway Safety Enforcement Officers possess a general public safety mandate and are responsible for the enforcement of various provincial and federal legislations including the Criminal Code of Canada.
As a member of Highway Safety Enforcement, the Highway Safety Enforcement (HSE) Officers are sworn Peace Officers and Special Constables as defined under the Criminal Code of Canada and the New Brunswick Police Act and as such have all the corresponding powers, authorities, and immunities. The Highway Safety Enforcement Officers will be required to carry use of force tools and apply them appropriately in each given circumstance. A Highway Safety Enforcement (HSE) Officer is responsible for enforcement of various Acts as they pertain to commercial vehicle safety as well as ensuring compliance with the Off-Road Vehicle Act, it's related regulations and other applicable legislation as directed by the Inspection and Enforcement Branch. Duties would include but not be limited to, massing vehicles, measuring vehicle speed, verification of over dimensional loads, enforcement of the Transportation of Dangerous goods and the general safety of motorists on NB highways.
What you will do
The successful candidate(s) will be required to work as a Highway Safety Officer at the Direction of Inspection and Enforcement New Brunswick based on operational needs. They will conduct compliance inspections; liaise and participate in joint initiatives with other enforcement agencies, provide emergency response during public safety emergencies, make presentations to various organizations in order to promote public awareness in relation to the safe and responsible use of commercial and off-road vehicles, and other duties as assigned.

Need to have (essential skills and qualifications)
- High School diploma supplemented by successful completion of a minimum of one-year course in law enforcement
- A minimum of 6 years related experience
- Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick
- Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Some positions require written and spoken competence in French and English. Others will require written and spoken competence in English only. Please state your language capability.
Candidates must demonstrate on their applications how they have acquired the education and experience for this position. Your résumé should be in chronological order specifying education and employment in months and years including part-time and full-time employment.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Considerable travel throughout the region will be required. Candidates must report to work where directed in the region. Candidates may be required to travel outside the region for special operations. Candidates must successfully complete a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) vulnerable sector reference check including fingerprints.
Ability to:
- Carry and utilize control tactics tools including a firearm
- Perform field work/patrols
- Work shift work
- Work nights and weekends and respond to after-hours calls
- Work alone with minimal supervision
- Carry out physically demanding tasks
- Work outside in inclement weather on all types of terrain.
Before an appointment can be made, the successful candidate will be required to complete the following at their own expense:
- The Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) at the Cadet level, unless requirements of the physical test have already been met within the 12 months prior to the closing date of the competition. If you have met this requirement within the past 12 months, please submit proof with your application.
The successful candidate(s) must also successfully complete an approved psychological suitability assessment as requested.
The successful candidate(s) must maintain current Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS) sidearm and control tactics qualifications during the course of their employment (applicants not presently qualified will be required to successfully complete a JPS administered Use of Force practicum, sidearm and control tactics qualification).
As a condition of employment, successful applicants will be required to successfully complete and maintain the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspection (CVSA) certification and any other mandatory training.

- Graduated from an Accredited Police Science Program
- Possess current Use of Force training
- Possess current Sidearm and Control Tactics certification
- Possess Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance certification
- Presently appointed as a Peace Officer
- Radar certification
- Lidar certification
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods training
- ICS 100-Incident Command System
Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.
