Definition of Work:
The Recreation Development Specialist I is a member of the Mental Health and Addictions Team and is responsible for developing, planning, organizing, supervising and evaluating comprehensive groups and individual Therapeutic Recreation Services. The Recreation Development Specialist uses extensive knowledge and skills gained through experiences in therapeutic recreation to address the needs of clients as part of their overall treatment and recovery plan. This position works with considerable independence and requires maintaining an active clinical caseload, while directing the activities of the practice areas (2E - Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre and Hope Valley); consulting and advising Therapeutic Recreation staff and other team members in the area of clinical expertise and clinical supervision. This position reports to the Unit/Site Operations Manager of Mental Health and Addictions and maintains accountability to the Regional Manager of Therapeutic Recreation for professional practice issues. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:
• Graduation with an approved/recognized Baccalaureate degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation with major course work in Therapeutic Recreation is required.
• Current Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) designation with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
• Minimum: 2 years' experience in the last five (5) years, working as a Recreation Development Specialist in the Mental Health and Addictions program area.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of assessment, assessment tools, program design/protocols, patient/client/resident care plans, clinical documentation, therapeutic interventions, facilitation techniques, leadership, supervision, workload measurement and group dynamics is essential.
• Demonstrated competencies in problem solving and program planning; be self-motivated and able to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
• Demonstrated ability to educate others and to establish and maintain effective working relationships; exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated positive, respectful and sensitive approach to the needs of Patients/clients/residents.
• Current BLS certification.
• An unrestricted Class IV driver's license.
• Consistent demonstration of the core values of NL Health Services: Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (I CARE).
• A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position.
• A satisfactory Certificate of Conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.

Preferred qualifications:
• Current registration with Newfoundland and Labrador Therapeutic Recreation Association.
