Executive Director - Athol Forestry Cooperative Ltd.
On behalf of our client, Athol Forestry Cooperative Ltd., we are recruiting an Executive Director (ED). Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will oversee a small team and ensure alignment with the cooperative's goals of promoting sustainable forest management and driving profitability to benefit its members. Additionally, the ED will ensure staff health and safety, compliance with regulations, and strategic growth of the cooperative.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and execute long-term strategies for growth and success.
- Identify and capitalize on opportunities in the forestry industry to expand services and revenue streams.
- Oversee the cooperative's financial health, including total profit and loss (budgeting, financial sustainability, revenue streams)
- Identify and pursue new revenue opportunities, such as carbon crediting and expanded services.
- Provide strategic oversight and hands-on management for the cooperative's business areas:
- Forest Operations: Lead and oversee sustainable harvesting practices and efficient resource use.
- Silviculture Treatments: Lead and direct forest regeneration as needed, such as planting and thinning projects to improve forest health.
- Forestry Consulting: Ensure Athol Forestry delivers expert advice to woodlot owners on forest management, resource planning, and compliance.
- Retail Operations: Ensure effective retail store operations.
- Supervise and mentor a team of forestry and retail professionals, fostering a collaborative and results- driven work environment.
- Develop and implement strategies to grow the cooperative's membership base, demonstrating the value of its services to woodlot owners.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with members, ensuring their needs and goals are addressed through high-quality services.
- Ensure a safe working environment by implementing and enforcing health and safety policies across all operations.
- Ensure all forestry operations comply with environmental regulations and promote sustainable management practices.
Education and Experience
- A degree in forestry, forestry technician, registered forestry professional or business with related forestry experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in forestry, cooperative management, or related industries.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams and diverse business functions.
- Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with sustainable forest management practices and industry regulations.
Working Conditions
- This is an in-office position in Amherst, NS. There is some fieldwork in the Cumberland County region to connect with the members and other stakeholders (mileage provided).
