Overview

As a member of the Research Services Group, the Industry Liaison Officer is responsible for intellectual property (IP) management and commercial evaluation of StFX technology for its transfer to industry for the benefit of the university, its researchers and the public. The Industry Liaison Officer plays the key university role in establishing and enhancing relationships between StFX researchers and the private sector, by stimulating and growing collaborative and sponsored research with industry and encouraging the flow of intellectual property from StFX research to industry. You will work to promote economic growth in northeastern Nova Scotia and in Atlantic Canada by commercializing intellectual property flowing from StFX research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate sponsored and collaborative research at StFX by building industry relationships, organizing campus events, and networking to attract funding, advance technology, and support the university's economic development mission.
  • Identify potential licensees for StFX technologies, negotiate terms, and draft legal agreements to license IP for commercial development, benefiting StFX, inventors, and licensees
  • Evaluate inventions for IP protection and commercialization, assist with IP disclosure documentation, and conduct patent searches and assessments
  • Oversee StFX IP policy, identify valuable research outcomes, and develop policies for all research participants.
  • Manage and support researcher funding applications for commercialization, including IP and strategy components
  • Draft and negotiate research contracts, advise on high-risk obligations, and sign low-risk agreements for StFX
  • Partner with industry groups to deliver education, training, and networking on IP and commercialization to StFX and businesses
  • Represent StFX at conferences, tradeshows or other events, as required

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in partnership development.
  • A Business degree and/or experience in fields related to intellectual property and commercialization would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with universities and managing multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects or tasks.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Highly entrepreneurial individual who takes initiative to drive growth and innovation
  • Willingness to travel as required.
