The Communications and Research Assistant is an integral part of the Public Affairs team, working with all sectors of the Union to develop communications and campaigns, and drive lobbying initiatives within the Union. Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs and working closely will elected leadership and staff, the Communications and Research Assistant will contribute to the objectives and the direction of the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the production and distribution of media releases, member communications, articles, and consultation submissions, etc.
- Coordinate the production and distribution of government communication such as briefing notes or information packages,
- Research and analyze information to contribute to various campaigns or lobbying initiatives,
- Review new and existing government legislation and provide strategic advice to management on lobbying initiatives, and coordinate with industry partners on collaborative submissions,
- Write, edit, design and distribute various communication products and tools,
- Assist with media relations and coordination,
- Maintain website, social media accounts and NationBuilder database,
- Manage promotional/branding material including related event planning and set-up, and design and ordering of promotional material in collaboration with relevant staff,
- Manage advertising and classifieds program for Union Forum Magazine,
- Ensure brand consistency through collaboration with Union staff and leadership.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Communication, Journalism or related field
- Superior writing and editing skills
- Superior interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Superior organization skills
- Strong understanding of federal and provincial government departments and legislative processes
- Ability to clearly articulate and express ideas and information succinctly with plain language, both verbally and in writing
- Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (asset)
- Website Content Management Systems (WordPress) (asset)
- Social Media programs and strategies
- Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
- Must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle
- Some in-province and out-of-province travel required
- Knowledge of the fishing industry or trade unions a definite asset
