The Attorney General is the law officer of the Executive Council and is responsible to see that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law and to ensure protection of the public interest. The Legal Services Branch provides civil legal advice and representation to all provincial government departments and related agencies.

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an individual to join the Legal Services Branch as Lawyer 1 or 2 within the Administrative and Employment Law Group.

What you will do
The successful candidate will be assigned to the Administrative and Employment Law Group and will work with other lawyers in a team setting and be responsible for appearing in all levels of courts and before administrative boards and tribunals on matters pertaining to administrative, employment and labour law. The successful candidate will also be responsible for conducting research in specialized areas of the law and providing legal opinions and advice to government departments and agencies.

Work environment

  • Location: Chancery Place, Fredericton, NB
  • Opportunity for hybrid work arrangement within New Brunswick, with prior approval from management
  • Minimum 36.25 work hours per week

Need to have (essential skills and qualifications)

  • Law Degree;
  • Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick;
  • Minimum 2 years of recent experience practicing in the area of employment and/or labour law. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

Candidates with less than 8 years of membership in good standing at the bar will be considered as a Lawyer 1. Candidates with 8 years or more will be considered as a Lawyer 2. Please state your date of admission to a Canadian Law society.

Nice to Have (asset qualifications) Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate, commensurate with years at the bar:

  • Experience conducting hearings before any level of court, boards or tribunals;

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required for some positions while others require written and spoken competence in English only. Please state your language capability.

Operational requirements

  • Travel;
  • Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license; and
  • Working outside of regular hours of work without prior notice.

Wage
$57,954 to $144,378 annually, depending on education and experience.
