The Environmental Science and Protection Division is responsible for the environmental review of major projects and monitoring the air and water resources of New Brunswick. It provides scientific assessment and environmental protection advice and reports on the state of the environment; develops programs and policies; and provides technical, scientific and engineering support. This includes interpreting, evaluating and maintaining awareness of research and developments in environmental health issues and initiatives on behalf of the department. The division consists of the Environmental Impact Assessment Branch, the Air and Water Sciences Branch and the Healthy Environments Branch.
The Department of Environment and Local Government provides integrated stewardship through planning and management of land use, and waste management issues. It ensures effective enforcement of, and compliance with, environmental legislation and regulations and provides effective consultation and liaison with local governments, regional service commissions and Rural Districts on governance related issues.

What you will do
Reporting to the Director of the Healthy Environments Branch, the successful candidate will be responsible for the administration of the Wellfield Protected Area Designation Order under the Clean Water Act. This will include consultation with local government representatives on wellfield protection; preparation of documents for wellfield designation; preparation of exemptions; overseeing geochemical and hydrogeological assessments as they relate to wellfield protection; developing terms of reference for wellfield protection studies and other hydrogeological projects; presenting oral and written reports to senior management; maintaining day to day contact with local government representatives and regional staff; presenting to and engaging stakeholders, Regional Service Commissions (RSC), and local government councils; delivering wellfield protection training workshops to local government and RSC staff, providing technical and policy advice, and responding to public inquiries.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Essential qualifications

  • University degree in Geology, Geo-chemistry, Geological Engineering, or other Engineering degree or Environmental Science degree and a minimum of five (5) years of related work experience.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Asset Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Public Engagement;
  • Conflict Resolution;
  • Policy/Standards Development;
  • Knowledge of Drinking water protection methods; and
  • Hydrogeology and groundwater flow systems & well construction methods

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Operational Requirements
Travel throughout the province is required. Possession of a valid New Brunswick Driver's license is required. Please attach a copy of your driver's license with your application.

Wage
Pay Band 5: $2,499 to $3,490 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week.
