About the Role

Reporting to the Manager of Public Health, this position is a key member of the health promotion team working within a population health framework by facilitating a connection between NLHS Labrador Grenfell Zone and NL Schools, supporting the work of the Healthy Students Healthy Schools (HSHS) initiative. HSHS is grounded in the Health Promoting Schools approach and aims to create, support and promote healthy school environments for students to learn and foster positive health and well-being. This position acts to reinforce the connection between health and education by strengthening partnerships, building capacity and facilitating health promotion action in the school setting. This position is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of school-based initiatives that increase the capacity of school staff and partners to create healthy school environments, as well as the implementation and evaluation of school-based initiatives that increase the capacity of school staff and partners to create healthy school environments.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an approved university with a Bachelor's Degree in Education or health-related discipline;
  • A Master's Degree in Education or health related discipline would be an asset;
  • Minimum of two years' experience in the area of community-based health promotion;
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, problem- solving, decision-making and interpersonal skills with an ability to engage and develop lasting, positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Strong oral and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills, and knowledge of adult learning principles;
  • The successful candidate will also possess strong organizational and administrative skills; be able to use information and communication technology effectively, and work to reporting deadlines;
  • Ability to work both as a part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision;
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of health promotion planning, including assessment, development, implementation and evaluation as well as resource development;
  • Strong understanding of the Health Promoting Schools Approach and the Comprehensive School Framework;
  • Be willing and able to travel throughout the district;
  • A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Drivers license and access to a private vehicle is a condition of employment;
  • Satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required;
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct;

Duties: (Included but not limited to)

  • Conducts environmental scans to determine current status with respect to school health needs and activities;
  • Develops and facilitates learning opportunities related to Health Promoting Schools for schools, health staff, parents and other stakeholders;
  • Leads comprehensive school health projects in select schools;
  • Supports schools to implement school health policies and guidelines;
  • Works with the three school boards operating in the Labrador area - NL Schools, Francophone School Board (Conseil Scolaire Provincial de Terre-Neuve-Et-Labrador) and the Innu School Board to develop programs aimed at improving the health of the children in Labrador Grenfell Zone;
  • Develops partnerships among health, education, municipalities, Indigenous governments, community organizations and provincial counterparts to support school health initiatives;
  • Participates in school district initiatives and committees;
  • Identifies resources in place in schools and communities to support health promotion activities in school communities;
  • Determine unique school needs with regard to implementing the new health related polices;
  • Liaises between NLHS staff, school staff and other relevant partners to coordinate school health promotion efforts;
  • Facilitates the sharing of ideas, information, resources and solutions to relevant stakeholders;
  • Collaborates with School Health Promotion LiaisonConsultants in other NLHS zones;
  • May be required to work alone;
  • Travel throughout the zone is required;
  • Other related duties as required;
