Job Summary
The successful applicant will report to the Provincial Manager Workplace Safety . In keeping with the organization's priority on Occupational Health and Safety, this challenging position will assist in the development and implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System. This will include providing advice and guidance to managers and Occupational Health and Safety Committees, providing training on safety topics, conducting hazard assessments and audits, assisting with the respiratory protection program for fit testing, following-up on safety concerns and supporting managers in completing accident investigation when required.
The Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator will work with other OHS team members to ensure the organization is compliant with current legislation, to ensure the organization meets the OHS requirements of the Workplace NL's PRIME program and for ensuring a proactive response to safety issues in a health care environment. The successful applicant will be responsible for assigned Eastern Health sites and will liaise closely with representatives from other departments within the organization as well as with representatives with Workplace NL, other regional health authorities and other external stakeholders. Travel to sites of responsibility in St. John's and Rural Avalon will be required.
Job Qualifications
Education
Bachelor Degree in a relevant discipline is required.
Post-secondary education in occupational health and safety would be an asset.
Experience
A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the field of occupational health and safety is required.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and industry standards related to healthcare safety is required.
Demonstrated knowledge of healthy workplace and safety parameters is required.
Extensive knowledge and skill set in a complex, dynamic and unionized work environment is required.
Extensive knowledge and experience working in a healthcare industry is a strong asset.
Extensive knowledge in the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively manage time, prioritize work, and work effectively under tight timelines.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, negotiation, mediation and networking skills, as well as superior oral and written communication skills is required.
Other
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation considered an asset.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
