SmartSkin Technologies provides manufacturing optimization solutions globally to the food, beverage, & pharmaceutical sectors. Smart Skin serves 18 of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world and 6 of the 7 major beverage brands with its patented and award-winning Quantifeel™ sensor and software solutions. While most of our engineering and production activities are undertaken in New Brunswick, Canada, our global presence is increasing with team members located in centers like Atlanta, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Munich, Los Angeles, San Jose, and Tokyo.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer at SmartSkin Technologies, you will play a pivotal role in developing and designing customized replica container twins such as cans, bottles, syringes, cartridges, and vials that will be sensorized with our proprietary pressure sensors. These container twins provide the data to understand the forces real containers experience in manufacturing processes in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.
In this role, you will be working within a multidisciplinary team to drive new product development from concept through to commercialization. You'll collaborate with engineers, technicians, and machinists to design and manufacture components for our container twins and ensure that mechanical designs are optimized for integration with advanced electronic and sensor systems.
The role of Mechanical Design Engineer is a great opportunity for an entrepreneurial, self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment. The position entails working with a multidisciplinary team as part of a new product development cycle, which includes developing concepts and taking them from initial design and prototyping through commercialization. The candidate will be required to work closely with fellow engineers, technicians and machinists to design and manufacture engineering components for our industrial internet of things sensor drones; and will be responsible for creating and maintaining 3D models, assemblies and fabrication drawings using 3D CAD packages such as SolidWorks
As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will:
- Design and develop 3D models and prototypes using CAD software (SolidWorks), ensuring mechanical components align with functional requirements for sensor integration and manufacturing.
- Collaborate with the electrical engineering team to design and assemble mechanical housings that integrate seamlessly with electronics and sensors.
- Develop and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including CAD models, assemblies, fabrication drawings, assembly procedures, and Bill of Materials (BoMs).
- Conduct design analysis and testing to ensure that new designs are viable, efficient, and meet product specifications.
- Assist in the development and enhancement of existing products, incorporating feedback from product and assembly teams and customers.
- Champion best practices in mechanical design, emphasizing functional simplicity, manufacturability, and long-term performance.
- Contribute to the improvement of existing design processes and help lead efforts to continuously innovate and refine product offerings.
- Work with external fabrication partners to communicate design specifications and ensure high-quality manufacturing processes.
- Provide support during the building and installation process, ensuring that the product is built properly and according to design specifications
Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and mechanical design, particularly with SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC milling, turning, and 3D printing, and their application in product development.
- Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills, with a focus on both functional design and manufacturability.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to both engineers and non-technical team members.
- Flexible approach to work and the ability to adapt to change
- Self-starter with the ability to manage and lead projects with a team of both local and remote colleges.
- A Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent industry experience.
