The Atlantic Pilotage Authority (APA) is a Federal Crown Corporation responsible for delivering safe, effective, and self-sustaining marine pilotage services in Atlantic Canada. We are currently seeking a Fleet Maintenance Technician (Technician) to join our team in a full-time indeterminate capacity.
Reporting to the Fleet Technical Manager, the Technician is responsible for performing general maintenance, repairing, and troubleshooting various propulsion, mechanical and power generation systems, enabling the Authority's fleet of pilot boats to operate in a safe and efficient manner.
The successful candidate will be mechanically inclined, have some knowledge of marine systems, possess strong diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair skills and be passionate about high-quality work.
The successful incumbent for this position must hold a permanent residence within a reasonable commuting range (no greater than 1 hour) to one of the following pilot boat docks located in Halifax, NS or Canso, NS or Saint John, NB.
The Technician will be required to travel to provide timely support to our multi-site operations in Atlantic Canada. The Technician must be willing to work on a rotational schedule, where the assigned work scope rotates between three primary compulsory areas, Halifax, NS, Canso, NS and Saint John, NB.
Qualifications
Education: A minimum of a high school diploma.
Certification: A relevant combination of the following:
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Valid relevant trade certification. Heavy Duty Read Seal Mechanic or Marine Diesel Certificate would be considered an asset.
- Valid Transport Canada Fourth-Class Engineer Certification or greater considered an asset.
- Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical considered an asset
Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of mechanical experience, preferably marine/diesel engine related and an understanding of the following:
- diesel engine workings / service
- plumbing systems
- hydraulic systems
- general aptitude for all around mechanical tasks and mounting of assorted hardware
- proven experience providing technical advice and coaching to less experienced colleagues
- experience working with planned maintenance systems considered an asset.
Preference will be given to candidates with marine experience although, resumes with relevant experience will be considered.
Skills:
- Ability to diagnose, evaluate, recommend, and repair technical issues onboard the pilot boat.
- Self-motivated, flexible and is comfortable multi-tasking in a fast paced, environment.
- Keen attention to detail, quality of workmanship, and is willing to research and learn new equipment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Aptitude with computer applications, including Microsoft Office and database applications
